Frantz, Pasteur, CalPreps: Who We Say Wins (and Why) the D-VI Regional Semifinals

EFvsDP

For the past four years playoff point guru Drew Pasteur and I have engaged in a friendly competition of playoff pick’em. His Formula vs My Feel. It’s been good fun and highly competitive. This season it continues. Here’s a look at who we think wins in Week 12. As for Week 11? We tied 94-18 each. That’s the second time in three years we’ve tied in the regional quarters. My key wins? Colerain, Mapleton and Columbus DeSales. DP’s big wins? Columbiana Crestview, Bowling Green and West Liberty-Salem.

As always, enjoy or destroy.

2014 D-VI REGIONAL SEMIFINAL PICKS

Region 19

1 Loudonville (11-0) vs. 4 Mogadore (11-0) at Canton Central Catholic Lowell Klinefelter Field
EF: Loudonville
DP: Mogadore (11-0) by 1 (51%) vs Loudonville (11-0)
CP: Loudonville 34-21
*Region 19 is the deepest small school collection in the state and Loudonville is a big reason why. So is Mogadore. Loudonville hasn’t allowed more than 14 points in a game this year and has scored less than 40 just twice. Stopping Loudonville’s record-setting senior QB Kolton Edmondson is Mogadore’s task. The Wildcats are making their 16th straight playoff appearance and 28th overall. They have 52 playoff wins. Loudonville has eight.

2 Sugarcreek Garaway (11-0) vs. 3 Kirtland (11-0) at InfoCision Field at Uniontown Green Memorial Stadium
EF: Kirtland
DP: Kirtland (11-0) by 10 (73%) vs Garaway (Sugarcreek) (11-0)
CP: Kirtland 35-24
*Kirtland (which owns a 55-game regular season win streak) is looking to make its fourth state final and win its third state title over that span. Consider them favorites. Last week was the first in which the Hornets did not score over 40 points (won 37-7). Garaway counters with a potent offense of its own led by sophomore QB R.J. Jacobs. He’ll be tested against a veteran defense.

Region 20

1 Defiance Tinora (11-0) vs. 5 Spencerville (9-2) at Lima Spartan Stadium
EF: Tinora
DP: Tinora (Defiance) (11-0) by 11 (75%) vs Spencerville (9-2)
CP: Tinora 28-21
*The Rams avenged a Week 9 loss to Wayne Trace last week (47-20) and are looking to ride that momentum. Spencerville is coming off its second win over Convoy Crestview. Classic small school clash.

7 Van Buren (9-2) vs. 3 Bucyrus Wynford (10-1) at Tiffin National Field at Frost-Kalnow Stadium
EF: Wynford
DP: Wynford (Bucyrus) (10-1) by 6 (65%) vs Van Buren (9-2)
CP: Wynford 27-19
*A meeting of teams that were a combined 10-10 last season. Van Buren is continuing its first postseason appearance ever, while Wynford is back after having an eight-year postseason streak snapped last year.

Region 21

1 Fredericktown (11-0) vs. 4 Centerburg (9-2) at Mount Vernon Yellow Jacket Stadium
EF: Fredericktown
DP: Fredericktown (11-0) by 3 (58%) vs Centerburg (9-2)
CP: Fredericktown 28-27
*Rematch of Week 7 game that the Freddies won 28-21. These teams finished ranked No. 1 (Fredericktown) and 3 (Centerburg) in the final NBC4/JJHuddle Central Ohio Division VI-VIII poll.

2 Lucasville Valley (9-2) vs. 3 Grandview Heights (9-2) at Nelsonville-York Boston Field
EF: Grandview Heights
DP: Valley (Lucasville) (9-2) by 5 (63%) vs Grandview Heights (Columbus) (9-2)
CP: Lucasville Valley 28-21
*Despite having to replace six first team all-conference players from last year’s regional semifinalist team, Lucasville Valley is back. Grandview Heights is coming off the second postseason win in school history. RB Joe Pinney (222 yards in Week 11) is key for the Bobcats.

Region 22

1 Lewisburg Tri-County North (10-0) vs. 4 West Liberty-Salem (10-1) at Clayton Northmont Good Samaritan Stadium, Matt Dudon Memorial Field
EF: Tri-County North
DP: Tri-County North (Lewisburg) (10-0) by 4 (61%) vs West Liberty-Salem (West Liberty) (10-1)
CP: Tri-County North 31-22
*West Liberty-Salem will try to take down their second undefeated team in a row after dispatching Cincinnati Country Day. TCN is the class of the CCC this year and coming off their first playoff win in history. The Panthers haven’t allowed more than 15 points in a game this year.

7 Versailles (7-4) vs. 3 Minster (8-3) at Piqua Alexander Stadium, Purk Field
EF: Minster
DP: Minster (8-3) by 5 (63%) vs Versailles (7-4)
CP: Minster 31-20
*This is an extremely tough one to call. A rematch of a Week 5 game that Minster won 34-19. Expect this one to be closer.
