Frantz, Pasteur, CalPreps: Who We Say Wins (and Why) the D-V Regional Semifinals

EFvsDP

For the past four years playoff point guru Drew Pasteur and I have engaged in a friendly competition of playoff pick’em. His Formula vs My Feel. It’s been good fun and highly competitive. This season it continues. Here’s a look at who we think wins in Week 12. As for Week 11? We tied 94-18 each. That’s the second time in three years we’ve tied in the regional quarters. My key wins? Colerain, Mapleton and Columbus DeSales. DP’s big wins? Columbiana Crestview, Bowling Green and West Liberty-Salem.

As always, enjoy or destroy.

2014 D-V REGIONAL SEMIFINAL PICKS

Region 15

1 Canton Central Catholic (11-0) vs. 4 Columbiana Crestview (7-4) at Minerva Dr. Robert H. Hines Stadium
EF: Canton Central Catholic
DP: Canton Central Catholic (Canton) (11-0) by 24 (93%) vs Crestview (Columbiana) (7-4)
CP: Canton Central Catholic 42-14
*The first D-V school that the Crusaders played was last week in the regional quarterfinals. A schedule loaded with D I-4 teams ahs prepared CCC for an extended postseason run.

2 Youngstown Liberty (10-1) vs. 3 Youngstown Ursuline (7-4) at Warren Mollenkopf Stadium
EF: Ursuline
DP: Ursuline (Youngstown) (7-4) by 16 (84%) vs Liberty (Youngstown) (10-1)
CP: Ursuline 28-20
*Huge game in Youngstown. Ursuline entered the postseason riding a two-game losing streak but could very well end with a five-game winning streak. This is Step 2.

Region 16

1 Huron (10-1) vs. 4 Coldwater (10-1) at Tiffin National Field at Frost-Kalnow Stadium
EF: Coldwater
DP: Coldwater (10-1) by 12 (78%) vs Huron (10-1)
CP: Coldwater 26-14
*Cavs throttled Chippewa last week and will look to do the same to Huron. Expect the Tigers to be ready. These same two teams met in the regional final last year and Coldwater won 60-13. Don’t think Huron has forgotten.

2 Findlay Liberty-Benton (11-0) vs. 3 Marion Pleasant (11-0) at Dial-Roberson Stadium at Ohio Northern University, Ada
EF: Pleasant
DP: Pleasant (Marion) (11-0) by 1 (54%) vs Liberty-Benton (Findlay) (11-0)
CP: Pleasant 26-21
*Pleasant has been a team that’s been near the top of the state polls all season but hasn’t necessarily received the attention it should. The Spartans have some solid weapons in QB Ryan Maniaci and ATH Kyle Galyk. L-B counters with bruising RB Austin Combs. He’s a sledgehammer.

Region 17

1 Columbus Bishop Hartley (9-2) vs. 4 St. Clairsville (11-0) at Zanesville Sulsberger Stadium
EF: Hartley
DP: Hartley (Columbus) (9-2) by 14 (81%) vs St Clairsville (11-0)
CP: Hartley 34-8
*Hartley is on a mission and is playing solid football right now. St. Clairsville is good, but can it beat Hartley? Our guess is no. We’re not sure anyone in D-V can.

2 Wheelersburg (10-1) vs. 3 Ironton (8-2) at Portsmouth Clark Athletic Complex – Trojan Coliseum
EF: Wheelersburg
DP: Wheelersburg (10-1) by 7 (68%) vs Ironton (8-2)
CP: Wheelersburg 28-21
*Talk about tradition, these two teams have combined for 57 playoff appearances, 69 postseason wins and three state titles. Wheelersburg returns 15 starters from a team that made the regional final last year. We think they get back. These two also met in the season opener. Wheelersburg took that one 42-16.

Region 18

1 Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (11-0) vs. 4 Jamestown Greeneview (10-1) at Centerville Stadium
EF: CHCA
DP: Cincinnati Hills Christian (Cincinnati) (11-0) by 8 (70%) vs Greeneview (Jamestown) (10-1)
CP: CHCA 31-27
*Was last week’s narrow win over Waynesville a wake-up call for CHCA? We will find out. Despite lacking playoff pedigree (program’s first trip), Greeneview is no pushover. Senior QB Chance Frye is a difference maker for the Rams.

7 Hamilton Badin (8-3) vs. 6 West Jefferson (7-4) at Kettering Roush Stadium
EF: Badin
DP: Badin (Hamilton) (8-3) by 9 (72%) vs West Jefferson (7-4)
CP: Badin 27-19
*A few weeks ago West Jeff was in jeopardy of missing the playoffs. Now they’re one step away from another regional final. Badin brings an offense averaging 361 yards and 33 points a game. The Rams have three of the GCL’s leading offensive players n QB Zach Larkin, RB Cody Boxrucker and WR Phillip Dozier.
