Frantz vs Pasteur: Ohio HS Football Playoff Predictions…Who wins Regional Titles (Week 10)

EFvsDP

For the past four years playoff point guru Drew Pasteur and I have engaged in a friendly competition of playoff pick’em. His Formula vs My Feel. It’s been good fun. And will continue next week. Until, then here’s a look at who we think wins Regional titles heading into Week 10.

As always, enjoy or destroy.

Division I

EF Regional Champs
1: Hudson
2: Wayne

DP Regional Champs
1: St. Edward
2: St. Xavier

*Public vs Private. This Division is as deep as ever as the state parochial powers continue to feast on each other and the public powers continue to separate themselves from everyone else.

Division II

EF Regional Champs
3: Bedford
4: Nordonia
5: Olentangy
6: LaSalle

DP Regional Champs
3: Bedford
4: Nordonia
5: Olentangy
6: LaSalle

*Unanimous (Although I also like Mayfield, Glenville, Perrysburg and Midview). How about the job LaSalle HC Nate Moore has done? When he went from Minster to LaSalle, some shook heads. Now they’re doing the same thing but for different reasons. Nordonia has talent overload. Olentangy seems unstoppable. Hard to fathom Massillon Washington has only a 3% chance to win its region (4) according to DP.

Division III

EF Regional Champs
7: Hubbard
8: Norwalk
9: Athens
10: Trotwood-Madison

DP Regional Champs
7: Hubbard
8: Toledo Central Catholic
9: Tri-Valley
10: Trotwood-Madison

*This was tough. Regions 8 and 9 that is. If Hubbard and Trotwood show up each night, they should make the Final 4. There are challenges no doubt, but talent-wise these two teams are on different levels. In Region 8, right now for me the question is: Toledo Central Catholic or Norwalk? Coin-flip. I’ll take the Truckers (and RB Breck Turner). Region 9 is a gauntlet. Athens features the high-scoring backfield of QB Joe Burrows (Ohio State) and RB Trae Williams (Ohio). The Bulldogs haven’t scored less then 49 points all season. Jackson has proven to be Southeast Ohio’s “second-best” team behind Athens all season long. The Ironmen own wins over Wheelersburg, Ironton, Logan, Waverly and Portsmouth (West Jeff and Ready are also victims). The scary thing? Tri-Valley might be the team that wins the regional title. The Scotties are Final 4 worthy.

Division IV

EF Regional Champs
11: Benedictine
12: Triway
13: Marion-Franklin
14: Alter

DP Regional Champs
11: Mooney
12: Kenton
13: Marion-Franklin
14: Alter

*I could see Mooney surviving Benedictine and Kenton outlasting Triway, but I’m not sure I see anyone getting past Alter. Clinton-Massie should offer a solid test in the regional final, but after that…whoever survives the Benedictine-Mooney brawl will have its hands full in the state final against the Knights.

Division V

EF Regional Champs
15: Ursuline
16: Coldwater
17: Hartley
18: CHCA

DP Regional Champs
15: Canton Central Catholic
16: Coldwater
17: Hartley
18: CHCA

*Coldwater vs Hartley IV. It’s coming. At least I think so. Question is which one will have to beat Canton Central Catholic or Ursuline to reach the title game and another meeting (rematch of last year’s state final and fourth meeting in 30 games)? Tough road. Coldwater is looking for its sixth straight state final appearance and third consecutive championship. No typo.

Division VI

EF Regional Champs
19: Kirtland
20: Tinora
21: Fredericktown
22: Minster

DP Regional Champs
19: Kirtland
20: Tinora
21: Fredericktown
22: Minster

*Surprised it’s identical. Extremely. Minster being the biggest question mark, but a glance of Region 22 produces one noticeable challenger – Tri-County North. Region 19 (Mogadore, McDonald, Garaway, Hillsdale, VASJ) is the toughest small school region in the state and as far as I’m concerned, when/if Loudonville and Kirtland meet you can consider that the state final. Or close to it.

Division VII

EF Regional Champs
23: Norwalk St. Paul
24: Arlington
25: Shadyside
26: Marion Local

DP Regional Champs
23: Berlin Center Western Reserve
24: Arlington
25: Shadyside
26: Marion Local

*According to DP, Marion Local has a 98% chance of winning Region 26. I think the Flyers have a 100% chance of winning the state title, which would be their fourth in a row. Wow is right. The big question is: Can anyone keep from succumbing to a running clock in the second half against the Flyers? My guess is No. State final included. No way ML doesn’t win this title. None.
