Bucknuts & JJHuddle Ohio HS Weekly Spring Awards
This spring we are pleased to announce that JJHuddle and Bucknuts have partnered together to award weekly player and team of the week honors in baseball, softball, girls track, boys track, boys tennis, boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse.
Each week during the spring sports seasons, we will hold a fan-generated contest on JJHuddle to tab a weekly Team and Player of the Week in each sport. Each weekly winner will receive an award from JJHuddle and Bucknuts.
How it works?
A thread soliciting nominations will be posted/stuck in each sports JJHuddle Forum each week. Fans will then nominate top performances. We will announce the weekly finalists (up to 10) on JJHuddle every Monday and voting will be conducted in a special JJHuddle forum. Voting will cease at noon on Friday, after which the winners will be announced.
WEEK 9 SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
*Mady Watson, Jonathan Alder (VOTE)
Threw a complete-game three-hitter in a 6-2 win over Springfield Northwestern in the D-III regional semifinals. Followed with the game-winning hit (a seventh-inning double) in an 8-7 regional final victory over Springfield Shawnee. Also pitched a complete-game with nine Ks.
*Mason Jamison, North Union (VOTE)
Winning pitcher went 4-for-4 at the plate as well in a 10-1 win over Bethel-Tate in the D-III regional semifinals. Also picked up a complete game victory in the Wildcats 14-6 win over Milton-Union in the regional final.
*Tara Thacker, North Canton Hoover (VOTE)
Senior threw a perfect-game and K’d 14 of 21 batters in a 9-0 D-I regional semifinal win over Mentor. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. In the Vikings 4-3 regional final win over Walsh Jesuit, Thacker K’d 12 and allowed three hits.
*Tara Trainer, Lebanon (VOTE)
Junior and Indiana commit K’d 12 and knocked in two runs in a 4-1 win over Northmont in the D-I regional semifinals. In a 3-2 victory over Mason in the regional final, Trainer K’d nine and went 2-for-3 from the plate, including a game-tying solo HR to lead off the seventh.
*Taran Alvelo, Bloom-Carroll (VOTE)
Junior threw her second straight no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Ottawa-Glandorf in the D-III regional semifinals. She K’d 17 and only threw 69 pitches (57 for strikes) in seven innings. In the regional final, Alvelo K’d 16 and went 4-for-5 with four RBIs in a 19-3 win over Elmwood.
*Emily Kusmits, Manchester (VOTE)
Went 3-for-3 with two HRs and three RBIs in a 4-1 win over Labrae in the D-III regional semifinals. Also led off the seventh inning with a single and eventually scored as Manchester rallied from a 1-0 seventh inning deficit to beat Independence 2-1 in the regional final.
*Addison Baumle, Wayne Trace (VOTE)
Senior issued a walk in the D-IV regional final against Kansas Lakota. Why’s that big? It was just her fifth of the season. Baumle K’d 10 (she has 166 on the season) en route to pitching the Warriors to the state tournament with a 2-1 win over Lakota.
*Gina Rosshart, Westfall (VOTE)
Hit a two-run HR and threw a complete-game (allowed four hits, K’d seven) in 4-1 win over Wellston in D-III regional semifinals. Followed that up by striking out 11 in a 4-3 regional final win over Wheelersburg.
*Mikayla Newland, Paint Valley (VOTE)
Threw a complete-game one-hit shutout and K’d 14 as the Bearcats beat Portsmouth Notre Dame 1-0 in a D-IV regional final. Before that she K’d 15 and allowed two hits in a 5-3 regional semifinal win over top-ranked Strasburg-Franklin.
WEEK 9 SOFTBALL TEAM OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
*Akron Manchester (VOTE)
The Panthers, who were a No. 5 seed in the district tournament and failed to land a player on even the all-district second team, advanced to first state tournament since 2001 with a 2-1 win over Independence in a D-III regional final. In the regional semifinals Manchester beat LaBrae 4-1.
*Jonathan Alder (VOTE)
The Pioneers earned their first trip to state by scoring two runs in the seventh inning to rally for an 8-7 win over Springfield Shawnee in a D-II regional final at Mason.
The Wildcats earned their first trip to the state tournament with a 9-3 victory over South Charleston Southeastern in a D-IV regional final at Tipp City.
The defending state champions earned a third straight trip to the D-III state tournament with a 19-3 win over Elmwood in the regional final at Bellefontaine. The score was 4-2 in the fourth before B-C exploded for 15 runs over the next three innings. The Bulldogs hit five HRs and had 18 hits.
*Licking Valley (VOTE)
Defending D-II state champions moved one step closer to title defense by winning their second straight regional title with a 10-0 six-inning win over Logan Elm at Pickerington.
*Paint Valley (VOTE)
The Bearcats outlasted Portsmouth Notre Dame 1-0 to win the D-IV regional final at Pickerington. With the victory, PV becomes the first girls team from the school to make a state tournament and the first team regardless of gender to make a state tournament since the 1995 PV baseball team won the state title.
The Mustangs made their first ever state tournament with a 4-3 win over Wheelersburg in a D-III regional final at Lancaster.
*Grove City (VOTE)
The Greyhounds won their seventh regional title and first since 2010 with a 4-0 victory over OCC Ohio Division rival Gahanna Lincoln in the D-I regional final at Ohio state.
The Blue Devils earned their first trip to state in five years with a 2-0 win over Akron SVSM in a D-II regional final at Firestone Park. Senior pitcher Kirsten Lightel threw all seven shutout innings and K’d eight.
*North Union (VOTE)
Three-time state runner-up earned its first regional title since 2000 and fifth overall with a 14-6 victory over Milton-Union in a D-III regional final.
