Bucknuts & JJHuddle Ohio HS Weekly Spring Awards
This spring we are pleased to announce that JJHuddle and Bucknuts have partnered together to award weekly player and team of the week honors in baseball, softball, girls track, boys track, boys tennis, boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse.
Each week during the spring sports seasons, we will hold a fan-generated contest on JJHuddle to tab a weekly Team and Player of the Week in each sport. Each weekly winner will receive an award from JJHuddle and Bucknuts.
How it works?
A thread soliciting nominations will be posted/stuck in each sports JJHuddle Forum each week. Fans will then nominate top performances. We will announce the weekly finalists (up to 10) on JJHuddle every Monday and voting will be conducted in a special JJHuddle forum. Voting will cease at noon on Friday, after which the winners will be announced.
WEEK 8 BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
*Jeff Burchett, St. Thomas Aquinas (VOTE)
Threw a one-hit shutout in a 13-0 five-inning win over Kidron Central Christian in a D-IV district final. He K’d nine of the 18 batters he faced.
*Sam Bordner, Bloom-Carroll (VOTE)
Threw a three-hit complete-game and K’d 14 in Bulldogs 7-2 win over Watterson in the D-II district finals.
*Josh Robinson, Anna (VOTE)
Accounted for nearly half of teams runs with five RBIS and two runs scored in 16-5 five-inning win over Summit Country Day in a D-IV district final.
*Jayce Vancena, Millbury Lake (VOTE)
Senior and coveted MLB prospect threw no-hit Elmwood again – this time in an 11-1 D-III district semifinal win. He K’d 11. Vancena also no-hit Elmwood earlier this season in an NBC game.
*Grant Muhlenkamp, Coldwater (VOTE)
Threw a complete-game three-hitter in a 4-0 win over St. Henry in a D-III district final. Threw just 72 pitches.
*Chace Culver, Wapakoneta (VOTE)
Drove in the game-winning run in back-to-back district wins over Celina (4-3 in the semis) and Lima Bath (5-4 in the final).
*Clay Grubb, McComb (VOTE)
Junior pitcher threw a four-hitter and K’d 16 in a complete-game 13-5 win over Arlington in a D-IV district final.
*Jordan Bostater, Bryan (VOTE)
Senior and team’s leading hitter came through with two clutch pitching performances en route to helping the Golden Bears win their first district title since 1999. He picked up the save in Bryan’s district semifinal win over Napoleon and was the winning pitcher (allowed two earned runs) in a district final win over defending state champion Defiance.
WEEK 8 BASEBALL TEAM OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
Despite being 8-16 and a No. 8 seed when sectional play started, the Buccs won the school’s first district title in 42 years (since 1972) with a 4-3 win over Cincinnati Christian in D-IV.
Rockets won their first district title in 31 years with a 16-5 five-inning win over Summit Country Day in D-IV.
*Newark Catholic (VOTE)
Green Wave won their ninth straight D-IV district title with a 12-1 five-inning win over Grove City Christian.
Explorers beat previously undefeated and No. 1 ranked Walsh Jesuit 8-3 in eight innings in a Division I district final. Hudson scored five runs in the eighth. WJ was ranked No. 3 nationally by MaxPreps.
The Tornadoes beat Minerva 3-1 to claim their first district title since 2006 and secure win No. 400 for head coach Dave DiDonato (340 games at Indian Valley and 60 at Dover).
Bulldogs improved to 27-3 won their first district title since 2008 with an 11-5 win over Tallmadge in D-II.
*Massillon Jackson (VOTE)
Polar Bears won a D-I district title with an 8-4 win over Uniontown Lake and then won the outright Federal League title with a 4-0 win over Massillon Perry.
Greenmen picthers (led by Adam Long) combined to throw a one-hitter as Aurora won a D-I district title with a 6-2 victory over Nordonia.
Storied program claimed its 16th straight sectional title with a 6-0 win over Dixie in a D-III final. Rams followed that with a district tile thanks to a 10-6 win over Reading.
*Canton South (VOTE)
The Wildcats won their third straight D-II district title with a 4-1 win over Alliance. After a 1-6 start, Canton South has gone 17-2.
*Mansfield Madison (VOTE)
Rams clinched the Ohio Cardinal Conference championship with an 8-5 win over Wooster.
*Marion Elgin (VOTE)
The Comets rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the seventh to force extra innings and then rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the 10th to claim a 5-4 win over Liberty Union in a D-III district final. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, the Lions strung together an LU error and three straight singles to advance.
*St. Thomas Aquinas (VOTE)
The Knights won their first district title since 2000 (and just second overall) with a 13-0 five-inning win over Kidron Central Christian in D-IV.
The Bulldogs won their fourth straight D-II district title and avenged their only loss this season with a 7-2 win over Watterson. Head into regionals at 25-1.
The Golden Bears beat defending D-II state champion Defiance 6-5 to win their first district title since 1999.
*Gahanna Lincoln (VOTE)
The Lions won their third straight D-I district title and fifth in seven years with a 9-3 win over St. Charles.
