Boys Basketball News & Notes from around the state
The recruiting world was flowing last week following the only spring, live period. The Ohio State Buckeyes were busy making waves landing Austin Grandstaff (6’5/2015), an elite shooter nationally. Grandstaff, who attends Rockwall HS (TX), gives the Buckeyes a shot-maker to go along with another Texas native Mickey Mitchell and Dayton Dunbar point guard AJ Harris in the 2015 class.
Another interesting thing to consider is OSU is also in the mix for Elijah Thomas (6’9/2015) of Lancaster HS in Rockwall, TX, who happens to be a buddy of Grandstaff. Southern Methodist seems to be the favorite to land Thomas, a highly skilled low post presence, but perhaps Grandstaff landing at OSU could sway Thomas to Columbus.
Esa Ahmad (6’7/2015) of Shaker Heights took an unofficial visit to Ohio State on Thursday and the Buckeyes’ coaching staff extended an offer. Ahmad is a developing 3-4 man with his increasing ability to put the ball on the deck. OSU already has a verbal commit from Mickey Mitchell at the 3-spot in that class along with the hopes of landing Carlton Bragg.
Simpson Lands at Alma Mater
Quincey Simpson, a 1993 Lima Senior graduate, will be taking over at his alma mater. Simpson will be officially hired on Thursday. Simpson has endless ties in Lima and has a knack for developing players. We don’t have to look any further than his son, Xavier Simpson, a catalyst for Lima Central Catholic’s 2014 state championship team as a sophomore. Simpson also coached LCC sophomores Tre Cobbs and Dantez Walton, both starters for the T-Birds this past season. Those three along with Lima Senior’s Jaylen Thomas, Ruben Flowers, and Rico Stafford comprised a travel team formally known as Team Lima. Simpson is currently the 16-and-under coach for the King James Shooting Stars, one of the elite teams in the country, which features his son, Cobbs, and Stafford along with several other elite kids around Ohio.
What remains to be seen is will the younger Simpson follow his dad to Lima Senior or stay and defend his D3 title at LCC? Quincey noted that his son loves it at LCC, and he isn’t sure at this time if his son will be joining him.
Davis Steps Down at Bath
Doug Davis will be stepping down at Lima Bath after a 10-year stint and two straights trip to regional play along with winning its first WBL title since 1970. Bath lost to the eventual state champions (Watterson & Norwalk) in each of the past two seasons.
