Bucknuts & JJHuddle Ohio HS Weekly Spring Awards
This spring we are pleased to announce that JJHuddle and Bucknuts have partnered together to award weekly player and team of the week honors in baseball, softball, girls track, boys track, boys tennis, boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse.
Each week during the spring sports seasons, we will hold a fan-generated contest on JJHuddle to tab a weekly Team and Player of the Week in each sport. Each weekly winner will receive an award from JJHuddle and Bucknuts.
How it works?
A thread soliciting nominations will be posted/stuck in each sports JJHuddle Forum each week. Fans will then nominate top performances. We will announce the weekly finalists (up to 10) on JJHuddle every Monday and voting will be conducted in a special JJHuddle forum. Voting will cease at noon on Friday, after which the winners will be announced.
WEEK 3 BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
*Austin Utter, Milan Edison (Vote)
Senior threw a perfect game in a six-inning 10-0 win over Oak Harbor. K’d seven. Headed to Ashland (to play LB) on a football scholarship. In his last two outings – both complete game wins – Etter has K’d 17 and walked one.
*Konner Klein, Akron Ellet (Vote)
Senior threw a perfect game and K’d 11 in a 12-0 win over Akron North.
*Branden Rife, Nelsonville-York (Vote)
Led Buckeyes to first win by striking out 16 in a complete-game one-hit 4-0 victory over Vinton County.
*Caleb Deford, Sandy Valley (Vote)
Threw a no-hitter and struck out 14 in a 3-0 win over Newcomerstown.
*Cameron Varga, CHCA (Vote)
Senior threw a five-inning no-hitter and K’d 13 in a 10-0 win over Seven Hills. In three starts he has 37 Ks and hasn’t allowed a run. It was also Varga’s third career no-hitter.
*Mikel Merker, West Carrollton (Vote)
Senior K’d 10 in a complete game 5-3 win over previously unbeaten Springboro. Also had a two-run single. Merker is 3-0 with 27 Ks on the season.
*Carson Mittermaier, Upper Sandusky (Vote)
Sophomore was key in a pair of wins over Riverdale. Came on in relief to record the save in a 7-5 win by striking out all six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings. In the rematch three days later, Mittermaier hit two HRs and had five RBIs in a 15-2 win.
*Brady Mahlerwein, Berne Union (Vote)
Senior broke his own school record for Ks in a game (14), which he set as a sophomore and last week, with 20 in a nine-inning 4-3 win over Fairfield Christian.
*Jake Sudduth, Dover (Vote)
Sophomore first baseman went 3-for-4 with two HRs, a single and six RBIs as the Tornadoes handed Indian Valley its first loss 14-5. .
WEEK 3 BASEBALL TEAM OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
*West Branch (Vote)
The Warriors swept a doubleheader with Salem thanks to back-to-back one-hit shutout wins. Jake Evanoff threw a one-hitter in the a 7-0 victory, while Kip DeShields (K’d 13) threw a one-hitter in an 8-0 win.
*Patrick Henry (Vote)
Patriots scored four runs in the fifth inning to break open a 4-4 tie en route to beating Montpelier 10-6 for head coach Shawn Sunderman’s 100th win at the school.
The Bulldogs won their 70th straight Western Buckeye League game with a 4-0 win over Lima Bath.
*Fort Recovery (Vote)
Since losing its opener to Celina (3-2), the Indians have won nine in a row. Last week they beat New Bremen, Franklin Monroe and Tri-Village (twice).
*Walsh Jesuit (Vote)
A week after being elevated to No. 1 in the PBR Ohio/JJHuddle Division I state poll for the first time ever last week, the Warriors remained their with another unbeaten week.
Beavers jumped 20 spots in the PBR Ohio/JJHuddle D-I state poll (from 47 to 27) thanks in part to sweeping a doubleheader with Centerville. Also split a doubleheader with Bellbrook (lost 2-1). Enter week tied for first in GWOC Central at 4-0.
*River Valley (Vote)
Vikings entered the PBR Ohio/JJHuddle D-II state poll after improving to 12-2.
Titans jumped 14 spots in the PBR Ohio/JJHuddle D-III state poll after improving to 8-3 with a doubleheader sweep of D-II power Wauseon. O-G won both games by a one run.
Eagles beat D-I power Lakota West 9-6 and shutout Seven Hills 10-0 to remain unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the PBR Ohio/JJHuddle D-III state poll.
The Redskins jumped 20 spots in the PBR Ohio/JJHuddle D-I state poll after going 7-0 last week. Anderson posted wins against Walnut Hills (two), Bellevue (Ky.), Kings (twice) and Withrow.
