Bucknuts & JJHuddle Ohio HS Weekly Spring Awards
This spring we are pleased to announce that JJHuddle and Bucknuts have partnered together to award weekly player and team of the week honors in baseball, softball, girls track, boys track, boys tennis, boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse.
Each week during the spring sports seasons, we will hold a fan-generated contest on JJHuddle to tab a weekly Team and Player of the Week in each sport. Each weekly winner will receive an award from JJHuddle and Bucknuts.
How it works?
A thread soliciting nominations will be posted/stuck in each sports JJHuddle Forum each week. Fans will then nominate top performances. We will announce the weekly finalists (up to 10) on JJHuddle every Monday and voting will be conducted in a special JJHuddle forum. Voting will cease at noon on Friday, after which the winners will be announced.
WEEK 2 BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
*Steve Asbury, Watkins Memorial (Vote)
Hit two home runs (including a grand slam) and had five RBIs in a 16-11 win over Heath.
*Bradley Burkholder, Granville (Vote)
Threw a five-inning no-hitter (K’d five) in a 12-0 win over Licking Heights.
*Shane Smith, Elder (Vote)
Junior threw a complete-game three-hitter in a 5-1 win over No. 1 ranked Moeller. Struck out eight.
*Bryant Shellenbarger, Mount Vernon (Vote)
Sophomore threw a no-hitter and hit for the cycle in a 21-1 win over Franklin Heights. Shellenbarger was 4-for-5 with seven RBIs. He hit a two-run HR in the second inning, a two-run triple in the third, a three-run double in the 4th and a single in the 4th. On the mound he worked out of a bases loaded no-out jam in the third.
*Brady Mahlerwein, Berne Union (Vote)
Senior went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a solo HR in a 10-1 win over Millersport. Next day struck out 14 and allowed one-hit in a 8-0 win over Fairfield Christian.
*Ben Rorrer, Field (Vote)
Sophomore threw a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over Mogadore.
*Cal Smith, North Olmsted (Vote)
Sophomore set the school’s career saves record (six) in a 5-4 win over Elyria.
*Mason McWilliams, Seneca East (Vote)
A week after throwing his first career no-hitter, senior and Ohio University recruit had another huge run. McWilliams went 2-0 during the week and allowed three hits in 12 innings. He K’d 25. In a doube-header sweep of Wynford on Saturday, McWilliams went 5-for-5 at plate with three HRs and nine RBIs.
WEEK 2 BASEBALL TEAM OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
The Panthers had big wins over Moeller, Butler and LaSalle. The Panthers 5-1 win over then-No. 1 Moeller was their first against the Crusaders since March 28, 2012. It was also just the third time in its last 71 games that Moeller had been held to one run. The Panthers also own a win over D-III talent Badin.
The Aves won four games last week to improve to 7-0. Why is that notable? Sycamore won just five games all of last year. Senior Greg Simpson pitched a complete game, went 3-4 with a triple and scored the game winning run in a win over Lakota East. The Aves also beat Colerain and Middletown (twice).
*Walsh Jesuit (Vote)
The Warriors remained unbeaten and took over the No. 1 spot in the PBR Ohio/JJHuddle Division I state poll.
The Panthers won five games , including four by one-run, to remain unbeaten at 9-0 and in first place in the GWOC South Division.
*St. Henry (Vote)
Redskins won their eight straight WCSM St. Henry Bank Invitational title with an 8-3 win over Russia.
*North Olmsted (Vote)
The Eagles tied a school-record for runs in a game in a 24-3 win over Lorain. NO had 16 hits in five innings.
The Fliers improved to 11-0 and jumped from unranked to No. 12 in the PBR Ohio/JJHuddle Division II State Poll.
Bulldogs remained unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the PBR Ohio/JJHuddle D-II state poll. B-C enters the week 8-0 and coming off a big win over D-III power Badin.
