Breaking Down the Brackets: Southeast District predictions, sleepers, potential match ups and favorites

One of the best days of the year is Selection Sunday for the OHSAA Boy’s Basketball State Tournament, and this past weekend drawings took place around the Buckeye state. Today, we start our look around the state in the Southeast District. We will break down the brackets, look at top match ups and intriguing potential games, and of course our predictions.

The Southeast District is comprised of three divisions (II, III, and IV). However, there are only two Division I teams in Chillicothe and Logan, who will be sent to the Central District.

Division II

In contrast to year’s past, the SE District will only get one DII team to regional play. This is a bummer, because the SE has three really good teams and a few others this season. The two sectional sites will be Chillicothe Southeastern HS and Logan HS.

stubbs_colSoutheastern Upper vs. Logan Lower

Washington CH (14-3) is the top seed at Southeastern and will be in the upper bracket. It will meet the winner of Hillsboro and Jackson. Circleville (13-5) and Miami Trace (13-5) round out the top half of the Southeastern bracket. At Logan, Vincent Warren (15-3) will meet Meigs (8-8) with the winner facing Athens (15-3) or Marietta (9-9).

It’s a shame either Warren or Athens will be out of the tournament by February 21st. Both of those squads are regional/state caliber outfits.

Logan Upper vs. Southeastern Lower

Logan Elm (17-1) earned the top seed at Logan and will get the winner of Fairfield Union and New Lexington. Sheridan (14-4), who is atop of the MVL, will play Vinton County (10-6) in the other half of the top bracket. At Southeastern, No. 2 Minford (15-2) will take on Greenfield McClain (7-10) and a good Unioto (17-3) squad will meet Gallia Academy (10-9).

Logan Elm has basically rolled through the year, but Sheridan has played some quality competition in and out of conference. Minford and Unioto is a very intriguing second round match up.

District Favorites: Athens, Vincent Warren, and Logan Elm.
Sleepers: Washington CH, Sheridan, and Minford.
Top Match Up: Circleville vs. Miami Trace
Top Potential Match Up: Vincent Warren vs. Athens
Our Pick: Athens

Division III

The Southeast District usually gets three representatives at the regional tournament, but this year that number has been reduced to a deuce. The two SE winners will join up with the Eastern District and one of the Columbus Districts for regional play. Both Athens 1 and Athens 2 are made up of sectionals at Jackson HS and Waverly HS.

Athens 1

Jackson Upper vs. Waverly Lower

Top seed Oak Hill (12-6)  sits waiting for the Fairland/Belpre winner, while at Waverly Eastern Brown (15-3) meets Adena and Southeastern (15-4) squares off with Northwest. Two potential, solid second round games with Oak Hill/Fairland and Eastern Brown/Southeastern could be shaping up. Interesting to note, Southeastern lost to Eastern Brown’s opening round opponent Frankfort Adena.

Waverly Upper vs. Jackson Lower

Zane Trace (17-2), a two seed, will await the winner of Wheelersburg (11-7) and Huntington (8-11). At Jackson, Chesapeake (11-8) plays Rock Hill and Federal Hocking (12-8) will tangle with last year’s regional champion Ironton, who has just a single win. Zane Trace and Wheelersburg could be a very good second round game. Four of Burg’s seven losses are to Valley and Minford with another to Portsmouth. We are thinking an upset could be brewing.

District Favorites: Oak Hill, Eastern Brown, Southeastern, and Zane Trace.
Sleepers: Fairland, Wheelersburg, and Chesapeake.
Top Match Up: Fairland vs. Belpre
Top Potential Match Up: Oak Hill vs. Wheelersburg
Our Pick: Wheelersburg

Athens 2

Waverly Upper vs. Jackson Lower

This is where top-seeded Lucasville Valley (19-2) lies and waits for Piketon (11-9) or West Union. Valley, who we believe is the best D3 team in SE Ohio, has only lost to Warren and Athens. At Jackson, Dawson-Bryant (12-7) will face River Valley and Nelsonville-York (11-8) will play Crooksville (6-12). The Ceramics of Crooksville are a dangerous team in this section of the bracket despite their record, but did lose to their opening round opponent by four points earlier in the year.

Jackson Upper vs. Waverly Lower

The Jackson Upper bracket has South Point (11-6)/Wellston (4-13) and Alexander (10-7)/Waverly. At Waverly, Portsmouth (15-3) will lock up with Westfall and Lynchburg Clay (13-5) has Portsmouth West (8-11). Portsmouth appears to be the cream of the crop down here, but Clay could be sneaky and South Point beat the Trojans by 18 points in December.

District Favorites: Lucasville Valley and Portsmouth.
Sleepers: Piketon, Nelsonville-York, Crooksville, South Point, and Lynchburg Clay.
Top Match Up: Nelsonville-York vs. Crooksville
Top Potential Match Up: Lucasville Valley vs. Portsmouth
Our Pick: Lucasville Valley

Division IV

Division IV will once again get two teams in the regional to collaborate with the pair of Columbus advancers. Meigs HS and Valley HS will be the two schools used for sectional play with the winners advancing to the Convo on the campus of Ohio University for district play.

Athens 1

Meigs Upper vs. Valley Lower

Racine Southern (13-4) is the top seed here awaiting the winner of South Webster (6-12) and Miller. At Valley, Paint Valley (8-12) will take on Portsmouth Clay (10-9). Southern has continued its streak of consecutive solid seasons, and should advance to the Convo without too much resistance. South Webster is lurking despite its record.

Valley Upper vs. Meigs Lower

At Valley, the No. 2 seed Fairfield (11-5) will await the survivor of Western and Glenwood. No. 3 seed Eastern Pike, at Meigs, will get to play the winner of St. Joseph (11-8)/Eastern Meigs. Fairfield is on a winning streak, and has played better competition than its adversaries. Keep an eye on Ironton St. Joseph, who will be looking to play spoiler.

District Favorites: Racine Souther, Fairfield, and Eastern Pike
Sleepers: South Webster, Paint Valley, Clay, Ironton St. Joseph
Top Match Up: Paint Valley vs. Clay
Top Potential Match Up: Racine Southern vs. Fairfield
Our Pick: Fairfield

Athens 2

Valley Upper vs. Meigs Lower

Peebles (16-2), who we feel is the top team in SE Ohio (D4), gets the winner of North Adams/Manchester. At Meigs, Waterford (10-6) faces Glouster Trimble (8-7). The two teams split a pair of regular season encounters with Trimble winning the most recent by 18 points.

Meigs Upper vs. Valley Lower

Symmes Valley (11-6), the No. 2 seed at Meigs, entertains the survivor of South Gallia/Green. Portsmouth Notre Dame (16-3) awaits the winner of Sciotoville (9-8)/Whiteoak. A Symmes Valley/Notre Dame rematch would be interesting as the two split regular season games. SV won the most recent (55-44) this past Friday.

District Favorites: Peebles, Symmes Valley, and Portsmouth Notre Dame.
Sleepers: Sciotoville
Top Match Up: Waterford vs. Trimble
Top Potential Match Up: Symmes Valley vs. Portsmouth Notre Dame
Our Pick: Peebles
