On Wednesday evening, all but one of the state dual meet finals contestants were determined. Eight teams in each division qualify for the state finals to be held one week from Saturday, which is February 8th, at St. John Arena on the campus of The Ohio State University.
The qualifying teams will be seeded by a committee into their bracket positions. Those pairings will be released by the OHSAA either on Friday or during the early part of next week.
Six of eight qualifying teams in Division I are the same as last year, while Delaware Hayes (Region 5) and Mason (Region 7) are new. Returning qualifiers are Oregon Clay (Region 1), St. Edward (Region 2), Brecksville (Region 3), Massillon Perry (Region 4), Marysville (Region 6), and Cincinnati Moeller (Region 8).
In Division II, one region will have their competition today, which will yield a team that did not make the state tournament last year. Out of the other seven to make state, all but one are returning teams, though Amanda Clearcreek (Region 14) was in Division III last year. New to the show is Wilmington (Region 15), while returning teams include Toledo Central Catholic (Region 9), Lexington (Region 10), Perry (Region 12), Claymont (Region 13), and St. Paris Graham (Region 16).
Semifinal pairings for Region 11, which will be on Thursday evening at Padua, place Padua against Bay, with Akron SVSM wrestling Tallmadge.
Only three of the qualifying teams in Division III made the state final eight last year, those being the returning champion Delta (Region 17), returning runner-up Tuslaw (Region 20), and Blanchester (Region 22). Newcomers to the state tournament include West Salem Northwestern (Region 18), Rootstown (Region 19), Bishop Hartley (Region 21), Dayton Christian (Region 23), and Lima Bath (Region 24). One note of interest is that Lima Bath was the lone team in a different division for dual meet state than individual state to make the state final eight; the Wildcats will compete in Division II during the individual state tournament series.
