What do Brandon Knight (Detroit Pistons), Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans), J.R Smith (New York Knicks), Rudy Gay (Sacramento Kings), Brandon Jennings (Milwaukee Bucks), Nolan Smith (Portland Trailblazers) and DeAndre Jordan (L.A. Clippers) have in common? Yes…they’re all in the NBA.
But they also belong to another basketball brotherhood. They all played in the Good Samaritan Flyin to the Hoop Basketball Invitational, which celebrates its 12th annual event this year.
Named the No. 2 high school basketball event nationally by CBS Sports/MaxPreps, the Good Samaritan Flyin to the Hoop has blossomed into a showcase for future pros and top teams from Ohio and around the country.
*During the course of its 12-year run, the Good Samaritan Flyin to the Hoop has hosted 20-plus future NBAers and hundreds of Division I college players. This season there are 18 current FTTH alumni on active NBA rosters.
*Some of the additional names that have performed at Kettering’s Trent Arena (and Vandalia Butler’s Student Activities Center before that) include: Jared Sullinger (Boston Celtics), Anthony Bennett (Cleveland Cavaliers), Trey Burke (Utah Jazz), BJ Mullens (L.A. Clippers), Norris Cole (Miami Heat) and Cory Joseph (San Antonio Spurs).
*Eleven of the Ohio teams are ranked in the National Guard JJHuddle.com Ohio State Power Polls, including: Northland (DI No. 2), Gahanna Lincoln (DI No. 4), Garfield Heights (DI No. 7), Dunbar (DII No. 3), Thurgood Marshall (DII No. 4), Cleveland Central Catholic (DII No. 5), Akron St. Vincent-St Mary (DII No. 6), Roger Bacon (DIII No. 3), Versailles (DIII No. 6), Summit Country Day (DIII No. 10) and Africentric (DIV No. 9).
