Who We Say Wins the D-IV Regional Semifinals: Eric Frantz and Drew Pasteur go head-to-head

It took four years, but I finally got the best of Drew Pastuer and the Fantastic 50 in the first round of the football playoffs. Last year we tied with 72 correct first round picks. This year – with more games – I predicted 93 games right. DP 89.

Neither of us correctly predicted an entire region. The best score was 14-2, which I achieved in Divisions I, II, IV and VII. DP went 14-2 in Divisions III and VII. Our worst region? 11-5. That’s what I went in DV and DP went in DV and VI.

The toughest region? DIII Region 16 where all four road teams won (Coldwater, Chippewa, Loudonville and Huron). Both DP and I went 1-3 in that region. We both won picked Coldwater.

Now on to the Regional Semifinals. Hoping for another first.

2013 DIV REGIONAL SEMIFINAL PICKS

Division IV
Games at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15

Region 11

EF: 1 Chagrin Falls (9‐2) vs. 5 Cle. Benedictine (8‐3) at Twinsburg Tiger Stadium: Chagrin Falls
DP: Chagrin Falls (9-2) by 6 (65%) vs Benedictine (Cleveland) (8-3)
*More than likely Chagrin Falls will have to beat three parochial teams to win this region. Last week the Tigers beat Cleveland Central Catholic 26-20 and now get Benedictine. Mooney could be waiting.

EF: 2 Struthers (9‐2) vs. 3 Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (7‐4) at Niles McKinley Bo Rein Stadium: Mooney
DP: #33 Cardinal Mooney (Youngstown) (7-4) by 12 (76%) vs Struthers (9-2)
*Struthers is 3-2 against the other five playoff teams its faced this year, but Mooney is a different monster. The Cardinals four losses are to teams that are 39-2.

Region 12

EF: 1 Caledonia River Valley (11‐0) vs. 5 Bryan (11‐0) at Findlay Donnell Stadium: Bryan
DP: Bryan (11-0) by 3 (59%) vs River Valley (Caledonia) (11-0)
*Bryan recorded what some are calling the biggest win in program history last week (beat Genoa 43-36). Imagine what they’d call a win this week? Both teams are good in close games (4-0 combined in games decided by 2-points or less or in OT). River Valley won its first playoff game ever last week – Bryan just its second. Someone’s history is going to get a huge addition this week.

EF: 2 Kenton (11‐0) vs. 3 Wooster Triway (9‐2) at Mansfield Arlin Field: Kenton
DP: #21 Kenton (11-0) by 22 (92%) vs Triway (Wooster) (9-2)
*Triway gets the next opportunity to try and slow down Kenton. Last week Wildcats QB Grant Sherman tied a national record by throwing for eight first half TDs in a 58-14 win over Galion. Triway has a great QB in its own right in Parker Carmichael (over 7,000 career passing yards).

Region 13

EF: 8 Steubenville (7‐4) vs. 4 Zanesville Maysville (8‐3) at St. Clairsville Red Devil Stadium: Steubenville
DP: Steubenville (7-4) by 14 (81%) vs Maysville (Zanesville) (8-3)
*Maysville won its first playoff game ever last week, while Steubenville won No. 48. Big question is can Big Red get to 50 this postseason.

EF: 2 Gnadenhutten Indian Valley (9‐2) vs. 3 Duncan Falls Philo (9‐2) at Byesville Meadowbrook Eugene Capers Field: Philo
DP: Philo (Duncan Falls) (9-2) by 6 (64%) vs Indian Valley (Gnadenhutten) (9-2)
*Both these teams won their first playoff games ever last week.  Now who makes their first regional final?

Region 14

EF: 1 Kettering Archbishop Alter (10‐1) vs. 4 Germantown Valley View (10‐1) at Centerville Stadium: Alter
DP: Archbishop Alter (Kettering) (10-1) by 5 (62%) vs Valley View (Germantown) (10-1)
*A pair of former state champions square off in the playoffs again. Stat of the game? Both teams have 31 postseason wins.  Since a Week 3 loss to Thurgood Marshall, Alter has allowed just 65 total points. Valley View scored 46 last week in itswin over Circleville.

EF: 2 Clarksville Clinton‐Massie (10‐1) vs. 3 Cin. Archbishop McNicholas (9‐2) at Kings Mills Kings Stadium: Clinton-Massie
DP: Clinton-Massie (Clarksville) (10-1) by 6 (66%) vs Archbishop McNicholas (Cincinnati) (9-2)
*The defending state champion Falcons beat Miami Trace for the second time this season (and in three weeks) last week and will now tackle GCL foe McNicholas. The Rockets only losses this year are to Cincinnati Northwest and Alter.
