Who We Say Wins the D-III Regional Semifinals: Eric Frantz and Drew Pasteur go head-to-head

It took four years, but I finally got the best of Drew Pastuer and the Fantastic 50 in the first round of the football playoffs. Last year we tied with 72 correct first round picks. This year – with more games – I predicted 93 games right. DP 89.

Neither of us correctly predicted an entire region. The best score was 14-2, which I achieved in Divisions I, II, IV and VII. DP went 14-2 in Divisions III and VII. Our worst region? 11-5. That’s what I went in DV and DP went in DV and VI.

The toughest region? DIII Region 16 where all four road teams won (Coldwater, Chippewa, Loudonville and Huron). Both DP and I went 1-3 in that region. We both won picked Coldwater.

Now on to the Regional Semifinals. Hoping for another first.

2013 DIII REGIONAL SEMIFINAL PICKS

Division III
Games at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15

Region 7

EF: 1 Akron St. Vincent‐St. Mary (11‐0) vs. 5 Poland Seminary (10‐1) at Ravenna Gilcrest Field: Akron SVSM
DP: #6 St Vincent-St Mary (Akron) (11-0) by 22 (92%) vs Poland Seminary (Poland) (10-1)
*Poland pulled out a remarkable come-from-behind OT win over West Geauga last week. Similar heroics will be needed this week. The Bulldogs are the seventh playoff team SVSM has faced this season. The Irish have outscored the others 235-61.

EF: 2 Hubbard (11‐0) vs. 6 Aurora (10‐1) at TBA: Hubbard
DP: #37 Hubbard (11-0) by 3 (58%) vs Aurora (10-1)
*Solid match up. Hubbard is humming along (averaging 49 points last six weeks). Aurora’s allowed 59 points total the last five weeks.

Region 8

EF: 1 Toledo Central Catholic (11‐0) vs. 4 Tiffin Columbian (10‐1) at Fremont Harmon Field at Don Paul Stadium: Toledo Central Catholic
DP: #9 Central Catholic (Toledo) (11-0) by 16 (85%) vs Columbian (Tiffin) (10-1)
*Irish dismantled Defiance 69-14 in playoff opener as Notre Dame recruit DeShone Kizer completed 11-of-16 passes for 318 yards and four TDs. Biggest question is can Columbian slow down a TCC offense that’s averaging 61.8 points the last five weeks? The Irish have scored over 60 points three straight weeks.

EF: 2 Clyde (10‐1) vs. 3 Sandusky Perkins (11‐0) at Bellevue Stadium: Perkins
DP: #29 Perkins (Sandusky) (11-0) by 7 (67%) vs Clyde (10-1)
*Rematch of a Week 6 game Perkins won 34-14. Clyde’s been on a roll since then (beat Buckeye 62-14 last week), but so has Perkins. Pirates sweep.

Region 9

EF: 1 The Plains Athens (11‐0) vs. 4 Dresden Tri‐Valley (9‐2) at Logan Chieftain Stadium: Athens
DP: #50 Tri-Valley (Dresden) (9-2) by 8 (70%) vs Athens (The Plains) (11-0)
*Despite its lofty ratings in the National Guard JJHuddle and AP state polls, Athens schedule has been less than impressive when compared to others in the division. This week that’s evidenced by TV being considered an 8-point favorite over the Bulldogs. Hmmm. One thing is for sure…this game is going to feature a ton of TDs. Athens averages 58.6 points. TV averages 40.6.

EF: 2 Cols. Marion‐Franklin (10‐1) vs. 3 Cols. Brookhaven (9‐2) at Columbus St. Francis DeSales Alumni Stadium: Marion-Franklin
DP: #36 Marion-Franklin (Columbus) (10-1) by 19 (88%) vs Brookhaven (Columbus) (9-2)
*Brookhaven pulled off a big win for the Columbus City League last week by beating Chillicothe. That sets up a CCL rematch with M-F, which beat the Bearcats 27-2 In Week 2.

Region 10

EF: 1 Tipp City Tippecanoe (11‐0) vs. 5 Dayton Thurgood Marshall (7‐3) at Clayton Northmont Good Samaritan Stadium, Matt Dudon Memorial Field: Thurgood Marshall
DP: Thurgood Marshall (Dayton) (7-3) by 1 (53%) vs Tippecanoe (Tipp City) (11-0)
*Game features two outstanding offenses led by two outstanding running backs in Tipp’s Jacob Hall (Brown) and Marshall’s Vayante Copeland (Michigan State). Hall is the Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division offensive back of the year. Copeland is the Dayton City League offensive back of the year. Tipp and Marshall have scrimmaged for the last four years, including this season. DP predicts Marshall by one. This might be the toughest game to call this week.

EF: 7 Trotwood‐Madison (8‐2) vs. 6 Springfield Shawnee (10‐1) at Piqua Alexander Stadium, Purk Field: Trotwood-Madison
DP: #34 Trotwood-Madison (Trotwood) (8-2) by 16 (85%) vs Shawnee (Springfield) (10-1)
*Two playoff regulars meet. Shawnee was the D-III state runner-up in 2011, while Trotwood has played in three straight D-II state finals. Both teams have talent, but Rams roster might have most in state top to bottom. Talent doesn’t win games though.
