Who We Say Wins the D-I Regional Semifinals: Eric Frantz and Drew Pasteur go head-to-head

It took four years, but I finally got the best of Drew Pastuer and the Fantastic 50 in the first round of the football playoffs. Last year we tied with 72 correct first round picks. This year – with more games – I predicted 93 games right. DP 89.

Neither of us correctly predicted an entire region. The best score was 14-2, which I achieved in Divisions I, II, IV and VII. DP went 14-2 in Divisions III and VII. Our worst region? 11-5. That’s what I went in DV and DP went in DV and VI.

The toughest region? DIII Region 16 where all four road teams won (Coldwater, Chippewa, Loudonville and Huron). Both DP and I went 1-3 in that region. We both won picked Coldwater.

Now on to the Regional Semifinals. Hoping for another first.

Division I (Regional Quarters)
Games at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16

Region 1

EF: 1 Lakewood St. Edward (9‐1) vs. 9 Cleveland Heights (10‐1) at Parma Byers Field: St. Edward
DP: #2 St Edward (Lakewood) (9-1) by 16 (84%) vs #22 Cleveland Heights (10-1)
*Both teams are coming off impressive wins. St. Ed shut out Shaker Heights, while Cleveland Heights handled Wadsworth. Eagles simply have too much.

EF: 4 Austintown Fitch (11‐0) vs. at 5 Westerville Central (10‐1) at Mansfield Arlin Field: Westerville Central
DP: #8 Austintown-Fitch (Youngstown) (11-0) by 5 (63%) vs #17 Westerville Central (Westerville) (10-1)
*There’s a reason Westerville Central finished second in the NBC4 JJHuddle Central Ohio Power Poll and the Warhawks showed it last week in earning the program’s first postseason win 55-7 over Solon. WC had three players rush for 78 yards or more. Fitch only allowed 80 yards rushing total to Marysville in its 31-21 win. Something’s got to give.

EF: 2 Mentor (10‐1) vs. 7 Stow‐Munroe Falls (10‐1) at Solon Stewart Field: Mentor
DP: #5 Mentor (10-1) by 19 (89%) vs #40 Stow-Munroe Falls (Stow) (10-1)
*Stow’s lone loss is to Hudson, which Mentor beat 38-14 in Week 9. Look for the Cardinals to run their win streak to 10.

EF: 3 Hudson (10‐1) vs. 11 Cle. St. Ignatius (7‐4) at Brunswick Judy Kirsch Field: St. Ignatius
DP: #1 St. Ignatius (Cleveland) (7-4) by 13 (79%) vs #10 Hudson (10-1)
*Hudson scored a big win (31-7) over Whitmer, last year’s D-I runner-up, last week, but that win doesn’t quite compare to the one Ignatius notched (35-14 over Canton McKinley). The Wildcats move on. Hudson is seasoned, though. Ignatius is the seventh playoff team the Explorers have faced this season.

Region 2

EF: 1 Hilliard Davidson (11‐0) vs. 8 Pickerington North (10‐1) at Gahanna Lincoln Stadium: Davidson
DP: #7 Hilliard Davidson (Hilliard) (11-0) by 8 (69%) vs #16 Pickerington North (Pickerington) (10-1)
*The match everyone in Central Ohio has wanted to see. Davidson has been No. 1 in the NBC4 JJHuddle Central Ohio Power Poll, while Pick North was No. 2 for nearly the entire season. Davidson hasn’t let a team score more than 20 points. Pick North hasn’t scored less than 20.

EF: 13 Dublin Coffman (8‐3) vs. 5 Huber Heights Wayne (10‐1) at Kettering Roush Stadium: Wayne
DP: #11 Wayne (Huber Heights) (10-1) by 11 (75%) vs #44 Dublin Coffman (Dublin) (8-3)
*Coffman made a statement for Central Ohio last week by coming to Dayton and handling host Centerville 42-14. Can they come to the Miami Valley and beat another of the area’s powers? Wayne is 2-0 against Central Ohio teams this season, having already beaten Gahanna-Lincoln (62-20) and Hilliard Darby (35-7) last week. Warriors junior QB D’Mitirk Trice has thrown for 31 TDs and five INTs.

EF: 2 Cin. Archbishop Moeller (10‐1) vs. 7 Cin. Elder (9‐2) at University of Cincinnati Nippert Stadium: Moeller
DP: #3 Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) (10-1) by 10 (73%) vs #13 Elder (Cincinnati) (9-2)
*Rematch of a Week 7 game the Crusaders won 35-14 despite having the ball for only 15:48 (Elder had it for over 30 minutes). Moe averaged 7.3 yards per rush in that game and QB Gus Ragland tossed three TDs. Could be closer this time, but result should be same.

EF: 14 Pickerington Central (8‐2) vs. 6 Cin. Colerain (11‐0) at Dayton Welcome Stadium: Colerain
DP: #4 Colerain (Cincinnati) (11-0) by 15 (83%) vs #24 Pickerington Central (Pickerington) (8-2)
*Intriguing match up. Pickerington Central is going for the GMC sweep after beating the other co-champ Lakota West 38-28 last week. Pick Central is the best team Colerain has faced to date.
