Division I Bracket Breakdown: What We See Happening

The 42nd annual Ohio High School Football state Championships begin this week with first round games in Division I and regional quarterfinal contests in Divisions II-VII. Here’s our take on what to expect in D-I.

Region 1

Brackets (Click Here)

Division I – Games at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9
16 Shaker Heights (6-4) at 1 Lakewood St. Edward (8-1)
15 Brunswick (6-4) at 2 Mentor (9-1)
14 Toledo Whitmer (6-4) at 3 Hudson (9-1)
13 Marysville (7-3) at 4 Austintown Fitch (10-0)
12 Solon (6-4) at 5 Westerville Central (9-1)
11 Cle. St. Ignatius (6-4) at 6 Canton McKinley (9-1)
10 Elyria (7-3) at 7 Stow-Munroe Falls (9-1)
9 Cleveland Heights (9-1) at 8 Wadsworth (9-1)

Favorite: St. Edward
Contenders: St. Ignatius, Mentor, Austintown-Fitch
Sleepers: Westerville Central, Canton McKinley

Our Take: When the dividing lines were drawn this summer this was easily Cleveland’s region to lose – specifically St. Edward and St. Ignatius. Ironically, both appear on different sides of the bracket. Expect the Holy War to have another act. If someone else does survive the parochial double-shot, we see it being Fitch or Mentor. McKinley has the most dynamic player in the region in junior Eric Glover-Williams, but the Bulldogs are licking their wounds after being blasted by rival Massillon.

Best First Round Game: Canton McKinley vs St. Ignatius
Best Potential Regional Quarterfinal: Austintown-Fitch vs St. Edward
Best Potential Regional Semifinal: St. Ignatius vs Mentor
Regional Final Prediction: St. Edward over St. Ignatius

Region 2

Brackets (Click Here)

Division I – Games at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9
16 Miamisburg (7-3) at 1 Hilliard Davidson (10-0)
15 Cin. St. Xavier (5-5) at 2 Cin. Archbishop Moeller (9-1)
14 Pickerington Central (7-2) at 3 West Chester Lakota West (9-1)
13 Dublin Coffman (7-3) at 4 Centerville (8-2)
12 Hilliard Darby (8-2) at 5 Huber Heights Wayne (9-1)
11 Springboro (9-1) at 6 Cin. Colerain (10-0)
10 Clayton Northmont (8-2) at 7 Cin. Elder (8-2)
9 Fairfield (9-1) at 8 Pickerington North (9-1)

Favorite: Colerain
Contenders: Moeller, Hilliard Davidson
Sleepers: Pickerington North, Lakota West, Wayne

Our Take: The GCL South got three teams into the playoffs, but all three landed in the same four-team bundle. After two weeks, only one of them could be left. The GWOC got five teams into the brackets and a potential regional quarterfinal between archrivals Centerville and Wayne looms. Other potential quarterfinals of note could pit GMC heavyweights Lakota West and Colerain (didn’t play in regular season) and Columbus powers Davidson and Pick North. It’s not often a public school is tabbed the favorite in this region, but with all three of the region’s parochial schools in the same four-team bracket, the odds are good a public school heads north for the state final.

Best First Round Game: Moeller vs St. Xavier
Best Potential Regional Quarterfinal: Colerain vs Lakota West, Hilliard Davidson vs Pickerington North, Centerville vs Wayne
Best Potential Regional Semifinal: Moeller vs Colerain
Regional Final Prediction: Colerain over Davidson
