Kenton’s Sawmiller sets national HS receptions record

Bucknuts Ohio Prep Star Of The Week

Justin Sawmiller, WR, Kenton: Kenton quarterback Grant Sherman may have thrown for 534 yards and six TDs in the Wildcats 48-2 win over Elida, but the headlines belong to Sawmiller who set a new national high school record for career receptions. Sawmiller entered the contest with 350 receptions and needed nine to break the mark of 358 set by Davis Howell of Tennessee last season. He caught 12 passes for 156 yards and a TD (and also ran for a TD).  Sawmiller’s 156 yards also pushed his career total to 5,151, which ranks second in Ohio history behind only Sherwood Fairview’s Ben Wonderly who finished with 5,172 yards in 2008. Depending on Kenton’s postseason run (they’re 7-0 and ranked No. 1 in the Ohio National Guard JJHuddle Division IV Power Poll), Sawmiller has a chance to break former Missouri high school star and current Missouri Tiger WR Dorial Green-Beckham’s national career receiving yardage record (6,356). Green-Beckham is a current teammate of former Kenton star QB and national prep passing record holder Maty Mauk. Mauk threw several TDs to Sawmiller during the 2011 Ohio HS season as the duo helped propel Kenton to the state final.
