Region 1 Preview

Teams To Beat

*St. Ignatius (11-2, Region 1 finalist): The Wildcats own a record
11 state titles, all of which have come under head coach Chuck Kyle
(301-69-1).  This year’s senior headliners? LB Kyle Berger (6-3, 208)
and OL Jimmy Byrne (6-4, 300). JJHUddle Top 100 Prospects, Berger is headed to Ohio State, while Byrne is headed to Notre Dame…MORE

*St. Edward (11-1, Region 1 semifinalist): The Eagles have
made the playoffs 11 times in 13 years and will make it 12 in 14. As
usual, St. Ed features a sizeable OL led by seniors
Jake Pruehs (6-3, 280/Ohio commit), Danny McManamon (6-2, 245), Jackson
Kirby (6-4, 290), Ben Gaal (6-3, 278) and Gage Blair (6-2, 260). That
group will open holes for junior RB Andrew Dowell (6-1, 197) who holds offers from Toledo and Kent State. Junior WR David Dowell (6-1, 185) also has offers from Toledo and Kent State.  On defense, the Eagles feature one of the state’s top juniors in…MORE

*Mentor (12-2, Region 1 Champion): The Cardinals made the
state semifinals for the third time in seven years last season before
falling to Whitmer. The big task this season for head coach Steve
Trivisonno (134-53 in 16 years) is replacing Mr. Football winner and North Carolina recruit
Mitch Trubisky at QB. Although the task is steep, expect Mentor to be
just fine. The Cardinals return 15 starters, including senior Conner
Krizancic (6-2, 200) who is expected to shift from his WR position to
under center. Krizancic, a JJHuddle Top 100 prospect and Cincinnati
commit, was a QB in junior high and as a freshman. He’s scored 32 TDs
the last two years (22 receiving, 10 rushing). Senior WR Brandon Fritts
(6-4, 190) is coming off a season in which he caught 67 passes for 1,188
yards and 16 TDs. Fritts, a JJHuddle Top 100 prospect, has committed to
North Carolina. Other key skill players include…MORE

Teams To Watch

*Canton McKinley (8-3, Region 2 semifinalist): The Bulldogs feature one of the state’s top junior prospects in QB Eric Glover-Williams (5-11, 165) who holds offers from
Ohio State, Nebraska, Illinois, Michigan State, Kentucky, Tennessee,
Arkansas and West Virginia. Last season, Glover-Williams ran for 1,574
yards and 22 TDs and threw for 1,114 yards and 12 TDs. The defense is
led by…MORE

*Hudson (9-3, Region 2 semifinalist): The Explorers have one
of the state’s top junior prospects in QB Mitchell Guadagni (6-2, 172)
who threw for 2,060 yards and 26 TDs last season. He also ran for 391
yards and three TDs. Senior DB John Zuccaro (5-10, 160) had eight INTs
and 95 tackles last season.

*Shaker Heights (8-2): The Raiders have an extremely loaded roster that includes four JJHuddle Top 100
Prospects in DE Joe Henderson (6-4, 225/Tennessee commit), WR Odell
Spencer (6-0, 175/Akron, Buffalo, Kent State and Bowling Green offers),
LB Gregory Claytor Jr. (5-11, 185/Akron offer) and OL Jamerez Brown
(6-5, 270/Offers from UCLA, Nebraska, Georgia Tech, Maryland, West
Virginia, Pitt, NC State, Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana)…MORE

*Solon (5-5): The Comets missed the playoffs for just the
second time in 14 years last season and had a string of three straight
Northeast Ohio Conference championships
snapped. Time to make amends. Offensively, Solon is strong up front.
The Comets return four of five OL starters in seniors Ben Emery (6-1,
267), Desmond Holmes (6-2, 265) and Matt Meyer (6-0, 240) and junior
Gage Golic (6-2, 225). Senior Nick Spitaleri (6-0, 250), who started at C
as a sophomore, also returns after missing last year with injury.
Junior TE Tyree Seals (6-0, 205) is back too. The quarterback position
will feature juniors…MORE

*Toledo Whitmer (14-1, Division I State Runner-Up): The
Panthers are 39-4 the last three seasons, each of which has produced a
regional title. There are numerous holes to fill, but talent remains.
Senior DB Marcus Elliott (6-1, 183) holds offers from Bowling Green, Akron, Kent State and Ball State, while senior WR Chris Boykin (6-4, 190) has offers from Kent State and Bufalo. Senior K Michael Baldwin (5-10, 160) is one of Ohio’s best.

*Warren Harding (9-2, region 1 quarterfinalist): The Raiders
have a special talent in senior QB/DB Lamar Carmichael (5-10, 170/986
yards passing & eight TDs). Senior DE Ty Howard (6-2, 205/Eastern
Michigan offer) and senior DB Deonte Morgan (6-2, 173) lead the defense.
The Raiders have an extremely talented junior class that includes…MORE

*Westerville Central (7-3): After making the program’s first
postseason appearance in 2011, the Warhawks narrowly missed out on a
return trip – finishing ninth in Region 3. A 7-3 record,
however, did net the program’s first back-to-back winning seasons in
its 10-year history. WC should stretch that to three. Led by longtime
head coach John Magistro, who won
his 200th career game last year, the Warhawks have several reasons for
optimism. “We feel we have our program heading in the right direction
and our kids have bought into the work ethic that we demand,” Magistro
said. “We are approaching this season with the idea that we can win
every game with the right approach.” Headlining the roster is senior
OL/DL Nick Richardson, a JJHuddle 2014 Top 100 prospect…MORE

Keep An Eye On

*Austintown-Fitch (9-2, Region 1 quarterfinalist): The Falcons feature one of the state’s top junior prospects in RB Darrin Hall Jr. (6-0, 205) who holds offers from Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Toledo, Cincinnati, Purdue, Michigan State, Florida Atlantic, Louisville and Arkansas. Hall ran for 950 yards and 14 TDs last season.

*Berea-Midpark (n/a):  What can the Titans (created by the joining of Berea and Midpark highs) do in their first year of existence?

*Brunswick (7-3): The Blue Devils are trying to snap a
three-year playoff drought. During that span, Brunswick has gone 5-5,
6-4 and 7-3, respectively.

*Canton GlenOak (8-3, Region 2, quarterfinalist): The Eagles,
who have been to the playoffs five times in six years, feature one of
the state’s top junior prospects in RB Jason Simon (6-1, 205).

*Cleveland Heights (8-2): The Tigers big hitter is senior LB Dorian Baker (6-3, 200), a JJHuddle Top Prospect with offers from
Pittsburgh, Akron, Minnesota, Ohio, Buffalo, Indiana, Vanderbilt,
Marshall, Toledo and Illinois. Other key senior contributors are…MORE

*Delaware Hayes (3-7): The Pacers are poised to take the next
step. Head coach Zebb Schroeder (6-14 in two years) returns 10 starters
on defense and nine on offense. That group includes seven players that
have started since they were sophomores. “If we are going to break
through to the upper part of our division, we have to defend the run better, run the football better and protect
the ball,” Schroeder said. “We believe we have the pieces in place to
do just that and our kids have the mindset that they want to be great…MORE

*Elyria (7-3): The Pioneers return two good ones in senior LB
Conner Kamczyc (6-1, 215/126 tackles, 10 sacks) and senior RB Jordan
Connell (5-9, 185/904 yards rushing, 19 total TDs).

*Findlay (8-2): The Trojans must replace 13 All-TRAC
performers, including the school’s career rushing and tackling leaders.
Sophomore K Grant McKinnis (6-0, 170) returns after kicking 46 PATs and
hitting 3-of-4 FGs, including a 49-yarder.  Junior OL Sam Lliff (6-3,
257) is one to watch.

*Lorain (2-8): The Titans have a new interim head coach in
Tony Shoulders who takes over for former mentor Mark Solis (now at
Olentangy). Lorain features a very talented junior class that includes…MORE

*Marysville (3-7): Senior DL Darius Walker (6-3, 270) returns
after making 59 tackles last season en route to All-OCC Central honors.
Also back is senior LB/RB Austin Pfarr (6-0, 220) who had 81 tackles and
ran for 305 yards and three TDs last season.

*Massillon Jackson (5-5): Senior QB Tyler Langenfeld (6-2, 180) returns after throwing for 1,593 yards and nine TDs last season.

*Massillon Perry (4-6): Senior OL Stefano Millin (6-6, 240) has committed to Kent State.

*Newark (2-8): The Wildcats will lean on senior QB and
four-year starter Grant Russell (6-4, 212). Russell has thrown for 4,354
career yards and 28 TDs. He’s also rushed for six scores.

*North Canton Hoover (8-3, Region 2 quarterfinalist): The

returns after rushing for 925 yards and 14 TDs. Also back is senior WR
Dan Rhinehart (5-8, 150/34 receptions, 519 yards, three TDs)…MORE

*Wadsworth (6-4): Greg Dennison (130-59 career record)
starts his 18th season as the Grizzlies head coach with a team that
possess a lot of experience. Last year, Wadsworth returned just three
starters. The only concern is replacing four starters on the OL. Key
returning seniors are…MORE

*Strongsville (2-8): The Mustangs have a JJHuddle Top 100 Prospect in senior LB Clay Caruso (6-3, 220/92 tackles, five TFL) who has offers from Buffalo, Bowling Green, Toledo and Kent State. Another key contributor is…MORE
