Teams To Watch

*Columbus St. Charles (5-4): A pair of 21-17 losses to Kings and Watterson in weeks 8 and 9 doomed the Cardinals playoff chances last year. This year Week 11 is within reach again. St. Charles has three legit D-I prospects in the senior trio of OL Nathan Puthoff (6-5, 280/Marshall and Middle Tennessee offers), OL David Heil (6-6, 330) and DB Ben Hale (6-2, 190/Bowling Green and Toledo offers). The schedule opens with Pickerington North and includes Big Walnut, Hartley, DeSales, Ironton and Watterson.

*Hamilton Township (7-3): The Rangers opened 4-0 for the first time since 1975 last season but a 3-3 finish over the final six games kept them out of the playoffs. Head coach Nathan Hillerich (20-10 in three years) expects this year’s club to contend for the program’s first postseason berth since 2002. “Expectations will be high,” Hillerich said. “We return seven all-league players and 13 starters from 2012. Filling the quarterback position will be the toughest task.” Junior Dante White looks like the frontrunner to take over QB duties. His learning curve will be cushioned by the return of junior Slot/DB Aaron Hall-Williams (5-8, 168), the reigning Mid-State League Offensive Back of the Year. Hall-Williams ran for 659 yards and nine TDs on 59 carries, caught 37 passes for 693 yards and six TDs and returned two of his three INTs for TDs. Another key returnee is senior DE/TE Micky Crum (6-4, 240) who has committed to Louisville. Crum ran for two TDs, caught two TD passes and had 29 tackles last year. Additional players of note are senior Lorenzio Bridges (5-11, 186/529 yards rushing, five TDs, 34 tackles), senior DB Dylan Napier (5-10, 155/62 tackles) and junior DB Dashawn Nelms (5-8, 150/43 tackles). On the OL/DL the Rangers return Kedtrick West, Logan Jones, Michael Wellman, Alonzo Jewell and Ben Swauger. New to the schedule are nonleague opponents Licking Heights (Week2) and Worthington Kilbourne (Week 3).

*Mansfield Senior (8-3, Region 6 quarterfinalist): The TYgers are thinking playoffs with a standout cast returning. Defensively, Mansfield returns a strong senior trio in DL Antonio Sanderfer (6-0, 190), LB Jaleel Taylor (6-0, 200/129 tackles, seven sacks, two INTs) and DB Chek Washington (6-0, 190/89 tackles, five INTs, three defensive TDs). On offense, senior QB Jalen Reese (6-3, 180) returns for his third year as a starter. Reese owns school records for passing yards in a game and seaosn. Washington is a standout WR (49 rec., 678 yards and nine TDs).

*New Albany (11-3, Region 7 Champion): The Eagles have a new head coach Pat Samanich whose served as the program’s offensive coordinator since 2005. New Albany returns six starters on defense, including senior DB Victor Chamberlin (5-10, 205) who had 64 tackles, four sacks and an INT last season. The offense returns five starters, led by senior RB Leslie Anoyke (5-9, 190) who rushed for 883 yards and nine TDs as a junior.

*Walnut Ridge (7-3): The Scots lost two games by one point last year and finished ninth in computer points in Region 7. Ouch. Senior DE Robert Bowers (6-5, 207) is a JJHuddle Top 100 prospect who holds offers from Cincinnati, West Virginia, Louisville, Michigan State and Pittsburgh. Last year he had 49 tackles, 10 TFL and 7.5 sacks. At LB, the Scots feature one of Ohio’s top junior prospects in Anthony McKee (6-2, 190) who has offers from Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, West Virginia and Illinois. He made 116 tackles last year.
