Team To Beat

*Kenton (6-4): The Wildcats had a string of three straight playoff berths snapped last year when they finished ninth in Region 14. This season Kenton will look to earn the 10th postseason trip in history. Despite only being in the postseason nine times, Kenton has a 22-7 playoff record and is 4-0 in state semifinals (2-2 in state finals). Known for its prolific offense, Kenton has another unit capable of posting incredible numbers. Senior QB Grant Sherman returns after throwing for 4,076 yards and 49 TDs (and just six INTs). He also ran for five TDs. The real bad news for opposing DBs? Kenton returns eight of its Top 10 receivers. The main target is senior WR Justin Sawmiller, a three-year starter, who caught 128 passes for 1,801 yards and 16 TDs last year. Also back are a pair of studs in junior WRs Colyn Blackford and Kollin Stollar. Blackford caught 54 passes for 684 yards and 10 TDs last year, while Stollar caught 43 passes for 621 yards and nine TDs. What makes this Kenton team special? It’s defense. The Wildcats feature two prominent defenders in seniors Matt Bahr (LB) and Noah Furbush (DE). Bahr was the team’s leading tackler last year (160 tackles), while Furbush (115 tackles, 13 TFL) has committed to Michigan. Kenton’s defense also returns junior DB Trevor Downing (63 tackles, four INTs), senior DB Kuert Lautenschlager (75 tackles, three INTs), junior LB Deric Legge (49 tackles) and junior DL jake Hale (56 tackles, nine TFL).
