Region 17 Preview

Team To Beat

*Columbus Hartley (13-1, Region 14 Champions): The Hawks were
derailed and shocked in the state semifinals last year by eventual D-IV
state champion Clinton-Massie. This season Hartley drops to D-V. It’s
talent doesn’t drop at all. Head coach Brad Burchfield (51-11 at
Hartley/82-36 career) returns seven starters on offense and five on
defense…MORE

Teams To Watch

*Baltimore Liberty-Union (11-3, Region 19 champions): The
Lions surprised some people last year with a legit run to the D-V state
semifinals. This year the focus will be on returning. And the odds are
good. Senior RB Jacob Basso (5-11, 180) spearheads the offense after running for 1,683 yards and 17 TDs last year. He also threw a TD and caught 24 passes (for 310 yards). Also back are…MORE

*Ironton (7-4, Region 15 semifinalist): The Tigers have been to the playoffs 30 times and five years in a row. Second-year head coach Mark Vass must replace 21 seniors. The schedule is again daunting with…MORE

*Martins Ferry (5-5): The Purple Raiders could be set up for a big run. Martins Ferry returns four of five starters on the OL – led by senior Luke Staub (6-0, 260) – and has a beast at TE in senior Robert Vargo (6-5, 242)…MORE

*St. Clairsville (14-1, D-IV state runner-up): The Red Devils
made a historic run to the school’s first state final last season and
have been in the playoffs six of the last seven years. Excellence is a
standard now – and will be maintained. Despite the loss of standouts
Matt Kinnick (QB), Jerrid Marhefka (WR) and Dan Monteroso (WR), talent
remains. Senior RB Jaylon Brown (5-7, 165) will be featured on offense, while senior
LB Michael Ferns anchors the defense…MORE

*Wheelersburg (8-3, Region 19 quarterfinalist): The Pirates
made the playoffs for the 24th time last season and this year should
make it 25. Impressive indeed. But the Burg hasn’t won a regional title
since 1998. This could be the season the drought ends. Last year the
Burg set offensive team records for yards per game (378.4), passing
yards (2,251), total recpetions (178) and receiving TDs (24). The good
news, seven offensive starters return including seniors Eddie Miller
(QB), Tyler Claxon (WR) and Dylan Miller (WR)…MORE

Keep An Eye On

*Chillicothe Zane Trace (4-6): Despite a sub-.500 record, the
Pioneers were close to the playoffs last year (finished ninth in Region
15). Senior RB Collin Swackhammer (5-11, 195) will log plenty of
carries…MORE

*Mount Gilead (2-8): The
Indians return senior WR/DL Michael Bland (6-2, 200) who had TDs
receiving, rushing and passing last season. He also had 54.5 tackles,
14.5 TFL and four sacks.

*Piketon (9-3, Region 15 semifinalist):
The Redstreaks return a good one in senior LB/RB Jeremy Farmer (6-3,
200). Farmer ran for 205 yards and eight TDs and caight 32 passes for
533 yards and three TDs. He also made 118 tackles.

*Portsmouth (1-9):
The Trojans return three All-SEOAL performers in senior QB/DB Brandon
Wedebrook (5-10, 160), senior RB/LB Johnie Charles (5-7, 180) and junior
WR/DB Alex Dickerson (6-2, 175).

*Proctorville Fairland (5-5): The
Dragons could push for the program’s third playoff berth ever and first
since 2003.  Junior QB Chance Short (6-2, 165) returns after throwing
for 889 yards and 10 TDs. Senior WR Kyle Sowards (5-10, 160) caught 21
passes for 354 yards and four TDs and also ran for two TDs last season.
Junior RB Nick Campbell (5-9, 165) was the team’s second-leading rusher
last year (512 yards and eight TDs) and scored 11 TDs. Defensively,
Fairland returns…MORE

*Westfall (9-2, Region 16 quarterfinalist):
