Region 18 Preview
Keep An Eye On
*Brookville (6-4): The Blue Devils own 10 playoff appearances but have only been to the postseason twice in the last 12 years. This year’s unit should challenge for a Week 11 game. Junior OL/DL Jared Daniels (5-11, 200) was first team All-SWBL last year and is one of five returning all-leaguers. The others are senior TE/DL Carson Alber (6-2, 235), senior QB Lance Stevenson (5-10, 170), senior OL/DL Jacob Heck (6-1, 195) and senior RB/LB Marcus Hummel (5-8, 170).
*Cincinnati Purcell Marian (3-7): The Cavaliers snapped a 46-game GCL losing streak last season with a win over Hamilton Badin. Can they take the next step? Six All-GCL performers return, including junior first teamers OL Thomas Darrah and WR Jair Knox (1,040 all-purpose yards; 409 yards receiving; seven TDs). QB McKell Jones, a second team selection, returns after rushing for 608 yards and throwing for 556 more (10 TDs combined, five each). The defense will lean on seniors DL Alex Raines (37 tackles), DL Zach Ward and LB Jaylan Winters. HC Brian Miller enters the season 12-58 in seven years.
*Cincinnati Roger Bacon (0-10): The Spartans went from a playoff team in 2010 to winless. Can they continue the trend and return to the playoffs? Many think so. Eight All-GCL Central selections return, including four first team seniors in DL Max Bishop (49 tackles), WR Carlas Jackson (52 rec., 621 yards, six TDs), LB Noah Most (65 tackles) and RB Eli Nixon (527 yards). Senior QB Ruggiero DeLuca returns after throwing for 1,307 yards and nine TDs. Junior LB Andrew Hawkins (63 tackles) is one to watch.
*Dayton Northridge (1-9): The Polar Bears will lean heavily on senior QB Brandon Spencer who earned first team All-SWBL Buckeye honors last year after throwing for 1,511 yards and rushing for 1,055 more. He accounted for 14 TDs. WRs Ivan King (5-11, 170, sr.) and Tyler Venters (5-10, 150, jr.) will be key targets. King had 29 catches for 361 yards and three TDs last season, while Venters caught 12 passes for 104 yards and two TDs. Venters also scored nine 2-point conversions, while King scored TDs three different ways (rushing, receiving and returning). Also back are all-league players DB Christopher Guffie (6-0, 155, sr.) and OL Trent Hatfield (6-0, 230, sr.).
*Greeneview (5-5): The Rams continue to climb towards the program’s first winning season since 1999. On offense, Greeneview returns all 11 starters. Expect junior QB/DB Chance Frye (6-1, 190) to contribute heavily. Frye threw for 908 yards and nine TDs and ran for 750 yards and eight TDs last year. Sophomore RB Logan Reed was the second leading rusher as a freshman (330 yards, seven TDs). A pair of talented senior WRs return as well in Dalton Caudill (22 receptions, 318 yards, seven TDs) and mason Gallagher (22 receptions, 272 yards, two TDs). Junior LBs Klay Partin (59 tackles, four fumble recoveries) and Klye Gilliam (55 tackles) lead a defense that returns 10 starters.
*Hamilton Badin (5-5): The Rams return four All-GCL seniors in LB Luke Marot (6-2, 185), QB/DB Cameron Mohr (5-10, 185), RB Eric Murrell (6-0, 180) and OL Michael Pate (5-11, 245). Mohr threw for 809 yards and six TDs last year. Marot had 70 tackles. Sophomore RB Cole Heflin (5-10, 170) ran for 258 yards and a TD in five games.
*Maderia (9-2, Region 16 quarterfinalist): The Mustangs must replace seven first team All-Cincinnati Hills League players, but they do return standout senior WR Grant Hopewell (6-0, 180) who caught 39 passes for 903 yards and nine TDs last year. He also made 37 tackles as a DB. Also back is senior DB Matt Ballweg (6-1, 170) who had 36 tackles and six INTs.
*Milton-Union (10-3, D-IV Region 16 Finalist): Seniors Wes Martin (6-3, 305) and Jason Siler (6-4, 235) anchor the OL. Martin was the SWBL Buckeye OL of the Year and has committed to Indiana, while Siler was a first team all-league selection too. Junior OL Andrew Lynn (6-3, 220) is also back after being second team All-SWBL.
*Preble Shawnee (0-10): The Arrows have suffered six straight losing seasons after going 5-5 in 2006. Junior LB Wyatt Austin returns after earning first team SWBL Buckeye honors.
*Reading (4-6): The Blue Devils have a JJHuddle Top 100 prospect in senior DE Shane Roy (6-5, 225) who has committed to Pitt. Roy had 98 tackles, four fumble recoveries and an interception last season.
*Waynesville (7-3): Despite putting the hurt on some people last year with a prolific offense led by then-sophomore QB Troy Black, the Spartans had their string of playoff appearances snapped at five. Waynesville, which scored 89 points against Preble Shawnee and 75 against Northridge, will again be led by Black, a second team All-SWBL Buckeye selection who threw for 1,034 yards and 14 TDs and ran for 463 yards and eight TDs. Replacing WR Ty Black – the school’s all-time receiving leader – is key.
