Region 18 Preview

Team To Beat

*Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (9-2, Region 16 quarterfinalist): The Eagles have made all eight of the program’s playoff appearances
in the last 11 years and have gone to the postseason three years in a
row. Expectations are high again. CHCA, which lost just four seniors to graduation, returns 16 starters – eight on each side of the ball. “We are looking forward to a great season,” head coach
Eric Taylor (43-14 in five years at CHCA) said. “We lose three
receivers and three DBs so we hope that our experience up front will protect the inexperience in some of our skill positions. The QB and running backs are all three-year starters.”…MORE

Teams To Watch

*Dayton Chaminade Julienne (6-4): The Eagles had lofty
expectations entering last year, but an injury-plagued season resulted
in no playoffs. This year, if CJ is to make the postseason for the third
time in five years, sophomore QB Jacob Harrison will play a key role.
Harrison, who transferred from Centerville last year, returns after
earning second team All-GCL honors (832 yards passing, 409 yards
rushing, 10 TDs combined)…MORE

*Mariemont (5-5): The Warriors have some key pieces to replace, but the talent coming back is notable. Senior
TE/DE Jon Bezney (6-5, 275) is a JJHuddle Top 100 prospect that owns
over 10 offers. Last year five of his eight recptions went for TDs. He
also made 76 tackles…MORE

*Middletown Madison (4-6): The Mohawks could make some noise with the return of two 1,000-yard rushers in senior Tre Owens (6-0, 180) and junior
Caleb Hollen (5-11, 180). Hollan ran for 1,059 yards and 10 TDs a year
ago, while Owens ran for 1,009 yards and 15 TDs…MORE

*Richwood North Union (11-1, Region 14 semifinalist): The
Wildcats made the playoffs for the fourth straight season last year and
won the program’s first playoff game. Can they extend the streak to
five? Yep…MORE

*West Jefferson (7-3): The Roughriders had played in five of
six regional finals before missing the playoffs all together last
season. They finished ninth in Region 20. West Jeff’s three losses? To
D-VI state champion Marion Local, D-V state semifinalist Liberty Union
and D-II playoff team Licking Heights. This season the Roughriders face a
new challenge with a new league (switching divisions in the Mid-State League). Five of the 10 teams on 2012’s schedule
have been replaced. New games loom with Jackson (non-league), Madison
Plains, Bexley, Columbus Academy and Whitehall-Yearling. There’s also a
trip to Marion Local in Week 2. “We will be a senior laden football team with big game experience,” head coach Shawn Buescher (86-40 in 12 years) said…MORE

Keep An Eye On

*Brookville (6-4): The Blue Devils own 10 playoff appearances
but have only been to the postseason twice in the last 12 years. This
year’s unit should challenge for a Week 11 game…MORE

*Cincinnati Purcell Marian (3-7): The Cavaliers snapped a 46-game GCL losing streak last season with a win over Hamilton Badin. Can they take the next step? Six All-GCL performers return, including…MORE

*Cincinnati Roger Bacon (0-10): The Spartans went from a playoff team in 2010 to winless. Can they continue the trend and return to the playoffs? Many think so. Eight All-GCL Central selections return, including four first team seniors…MORE

*Dayton Northridge (1-9): The Polar Bears will lean heavily on senior
QB Brandon Spencer who earned first team All-SWBL Buckeye honors last
year after throwing for 1,511 yards and rushing for 1,055 more. He
accounted for 14 TDs…MORE

*Greeneview (5-5): The Rams continue to climb towards the program’s first winning season since 1999. On offense, Greeneview returns all 11 starters. Junior LBs Klay Partin (59 tackles, four fumble recoveries) and Klye Gilliam (55 tackles) lead a defense that returns 10 starters…MORE

*Hamilton Badin (5-5): The Rams return four All-GCL seniors in
LB Luke Marot (6-2, 185), QB/DB Cameron Mohr (5-10, 185), RB Eric
Murrell (6-0, 180) and OL Michael Pate (5-11, 245)…MORE

*Maderia (9-2, Region 16 quarterfinalist): The Mustangs must replace seven first team All-Cincinnati Hills League players, but they do return standout senior
WR Grant Hopewell (6-0, 180) who caught 39 passes for 903 yards and
nine TDs last year. He also made 37 tackles as a DB. Also back is…MORE

*Milton-Union (10-3, D-IV Region 16 Finalist): Seniors Wes
Martin (6-3, 305) and Jason Siler (6-4, 235) anchor the OL. Martin was
the SWBL Buckeye OL of the Year and has committed to Indiana, while
Siler was a first team all-league selection too…MORE

*Preble Shawnee (0-10): The Arrows have suffered six straight losing seasons after going 5-5 in 2006. Junior LB Wyatt Austin returns after earning first team SWBL Buckeye honors.

*Reading (4-6): The Blue Devils have a JJHuddle Top 100 prospect in senior DE Shane Roy (6-5, 225) who has committed to Pitt. Roy had 98 tackles, four fumble recoveries and an interception last season.

*Waynesville (7-3): Despite putting the hurt on some people
last year with a prolific offense led by then-sophomore QB Troy Black,
the Spartans had their string of playoff appearances snapped at five.
Waynesville, which scored 89 points against Preble Shawnee and 75
against Northridge, will again be led by Black, a second team All-SWBL
Buckeye selection…MORE
