Region 22 Preview

Keep An Eye On

*Arcanum (3-7): The Trojans return a good one in senior LB Mason Garber (6-2, 183) who had 111 tackles, including 90 solo, last year.

*Cincinnati Country Day (4-5): The Indians return a dynamic player in senior RB/WR/DB JR Menifee (5-10, 175). Mennifee had 1,004 all-purpose yards last year and scored TDs receiving (three), rushing (two) and on INT, punt and kickoff returns.

*Dayton Christian (10-1, Region 20 quarterfinalist): The Warriors must adjust to life after Heath Harding. Now a freshman RB at Miami (Oh.), Harding set multiple  program records en route to helping DC earn its first playoff berth ever last year. Where to start? How about with junior QB/RB/DB Brandon Williams (6-0, 165) who threw for seven TDs, ran for five and returned an INT and kickoff for TDs last year. Also back is junior RB/DB Mikel Davis (6-1, 165) who returned two INTs for TDs last year.

*National Trail (6-4): Under the direction of head coach Tony Sonsini (7-13 in two years), the Blazers had a memorable season last year. NT, which went just 2-58 from 2007-2011, posted its first winning record in 16 years. There’s plenty to be excited about moving forward. Junior QB Garrett Griffin (6-4, 175) threw for 2,112 yards and 16 TDs last season en route to setting 10 school records. He’s just nine TDs and 345 yards shy of being the program’s career leader in both. Senior WR Devin Mize (5-9, 150) returns after catching 37 passes for 875 yards and six TDs. He added two INTs on defense and averaged 32.8 yards as a punter. Along the lines, expect juniors Josh Baker (OL/DL, 6-3, 315) and Cody Hapner (TE/LB, 6-1, 205/55 tackles, five sacks) to contribute heavily. Under coach Mike Griffin, NT’s defense improved 20 points in points allowed last year, going from 50 to 30. “We took a giant step in the right direction last year, but we know that there will be a target on our back this coming season,” Sonsini said. “Our goal is to take it one game at a time, not overlook any team and try to be 1-0 every Saturday morning at film. Teams have been used to pushing us around over the years, and that allowed us to sneak up on some teams. That is not going to happen with as many starters as we have returning this year.”

*New Lebanon Dixie (7-4, D-V Region 20 Quarterfinalist): The Greyhounds rode a strong senior class to their first playoff appearance ever last season. Graduation has left large holes. Dixie must replace its leading passer, rusher and receiver. Junior QB Justin Leonard threw just five passes last year in back-up duty and senior RB Trent Cummins (195 yards on 37 carries) is the top returning rusher.

*St. Henry (9-4, Region 20 finalist): The Redskins are under new direction with first year head coach Brad Luthman who replaced Jeff Starkey. Starkey (two state titles) left to become principal at LaBrae. Luthman, who won a state title as a player at Versailles and has spent the last two seasons on Marion Local’s staff, inherits a team that returns a pair of second team All-MAC players in senior RB Adam Reichert and senior DB Tyler Schwieterman.

*Williamsburg (3-7): The Wildcats return a good one in senior DL Jordan Wright (6-1, 210).
