The OHSAA has produced a proposal for its 2013 high school football finals that will be voted on June 13 at the organization’s Board of Director’s Meeting. This will be the first season that seven state finals will be contested.

The proposal calls for three night games, including D-III on Thursday, D-I on Friday and D-II on Saturday. Divisions V and VII would also play Friday, while Divisions IV and VI would be Saturday.

The plan is for the D-I game to remain at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium. It is unclear right now whether or not the Thursday D-III game would be at Fawcett too since that would call for a quick turnaround with Friday’s 11 a.m. game also at Fawcett.

According to OHSAA Interim Assistant Commissioner Beau Rugg, the reason for having Divisions I, II and III at night are because those “marquee” games could draw the “casual fan.”

The proposal will only be good for 2013.

In 2014 and 2015 the state football finals will be held at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. Times, days and/or divisional assignments could change then.

The OHSAA also voiced legitimate concerns with annually putting a Saturday night state final up against the Big Ten Championship game.
