This Sunday, mark your calendar; the Hoops With a Heart Classic presented by DB Hoops will take place at Walsh University. Tournament director Dwight Blair has put together a solid line up for hoop fans looking for an early Christmas gift.

The event unfolds at 1 p.m. with a scrappy Eastlake North squad meeting a talented Shaker Heights outfit, ranked No. 10 in our latest JJHuddle Power Poll.

Fans will have a chance to see a Red Raiders line up featuring senior Kash Blackwell (6’4), junior Rosel Hurley (6’5), sophomore Esa Ahmad (6’6), and freshman Keith Griffin (5’10).  Hurley and Ahmad are two of the state’s best in their respective classes, and Griffin is arguably the best lead guard in the freshmen group.

Game 2, Lexington Lafayette (KY) will battle with Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, which is slated for 3 p.m. The Irish are ranked No. 5 in the latest JJHuddle Power Poll.

Lafayette is just (2-4) on the year, but has played a difficult schedule. The Generals are led by junior Jackson Davis (6’8), who is being courted by several Division I schools. Davis is averaging 18 points and nearly 11 rebounds per game. Senior Tranard Chester (6’3) is another solid option. Chester is averaging 15.3 points. Senior Nick Trisko (6’8) adds 9.5 points and nearly eight rebounds per outing.

SVSM (2-3) has struggled to start the season in large part due to the strength of schedule and the football players trying to get in basketball shape. The Irish won their opener against University (IL), but lost their next three to Cleveland CC, Seton Academy (IL), and Hoban before bouncing back to beat Lakewood St. Edward.

Freshman VJ King (6’7) – one of the nation’s best- has been very good in the early going outside of a tough showing against rival Akron Hoban. King leads the Irish at 16.6 points per game, while junior Jalen Hudson (6’5) is scoring at 15 points a night. Senior Nick Wells (6’6) is another scoring option for SVSM along with guards junior Jarel Woolridge (5-9), and senior Franshon Bickley (5’7) and Jordan Hargrove (6’1).  Also, keep an eye on freshman Henry Baddley (6’4).

The 5 p.m. timeslot will see Akron Ellet meet an underrated Youngstown East team. East is (5-1) on the year with its only loss coming to Youngstown Mooney by two points.  The Orangemen are just (1-5) on the year.

Deontay Scott, Terrell McClain, Jamir Humphrey, and Marquis Cotton lead the Panthers. Scott is averaging better than 18 points and 14 rebounds per game. Junior guard Dionte Williams leads Ellet.

The Classic closer features Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas taking on Wickliffe. The game is set to tip at 7 p.m.

The St. Thomas Aquinas Knights will play unbeaten Uniontown Lake on Saturday before Sunday’s match up with Wickliffe. The Knights (3-3) are a balanced squad led by Matt Steel, Austin Hill, Will Burger, Sam Pusateri, Anthony Moeglin, and Anthony Snyder.  Hill- the 6-foot-2 junior- leads the Knights at 15.3 points per game. The Blue Devils are just (2-3) on the year, but their losses are to Cornerstone Christian, unbeaten Beachwood, and Chagrin Falls. Ethan Nobbe leads Wickliffe at 15 points per game with a season-high of 27 against Cornerstone. Matt Mrosko is another option for the Blue Devils as he averages nearly 10 points per game.

Tickets are $8 dollars for adults and $6 for students and seniors. Kids under the age of six get in for free.
