JJHuddle Ohio Wrestling Notes: Ironman Thoughts, Wrestlers of the Week & More

JJHuddle’s Ohio High School Wrestling Notebook and Wrestlers of the Week

The second weekend of the wrestling season is in the books and so is another Ironman. Who had performances of note? What’s coming up? Who won last week? And who are the JJH Wrestler of the Week? It’s all here…

Sarah Allen, Sr., 106, Wayne – Recorded three pins, a technical fall and a decision in claiming the Edgewood Invitational title.

Alex Marinelli. Fr., 152, Graham – Entered the Ironman unseeded, but roared through to the finals after knocking off defending Division III state champ Jordan Marshall of Troy Christian.

Anyone who thought Graham might be vulnerable this year received a little bit of a wake up call at the Walsh Ironman tournament.

The Falcons were the highest placing Ohio team, finishing third with 143 points, 11 points ahead of Lakewood St. Ed. Massillon Perry, sixth, was the only other Ohio team in the top 10 this year. Blair Academy reclaimed the title for the first time in three years.

Eli Stickley (106) and Bo Jordan (160) claimed titles for the Falcons. For Jordan, it was his third title in three appearances at the Ironman after missing his freshman year while rehabbing from a shoulder injury. Micah Jordan (132) finished second after knocking off the nation’s top ranked wrestler – St. Ed’s Dan Heil – 6-5 in the semifinals while unseeded Alex Marinelli finished second at 152.

Heil bounced back to finish third for St. Ed, which placed just two wrestlers in the finals. Edgar Bright held off Jacob Danishek 3-2 for the title at 145 while Gabe Dzuro was second at 195.

Dayton Christian’s Danishek, who was the ninth seed entering the tournament, tore a path to the finals, defeating the top seed 10-5 in the quarterfinals after kicking the Blair wrestler out five times.

There weren’t many finalists for the home state.

Stickley defeated Massillon Perry’s Jose Rodriguez at 106, Nathan Tomasello of CVCA defeated former Ohio state champ Matthew Kolodzik (now of Blair Academy) in the final at 120 and Troy Christian’s BJ Toal was second at 182.

Firebirds soar at Classic: The Fairmont Firebirds claimed the Firebird Classic last weekend with a 62 point cushion over Lakota West.

Josh Parrett (126) was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler after winning his second career title. Matt Denlinger (132) also claimed a title for Fairmont.

Fairmont also placed nine other wrestlers in the top 4 of their weight classes – Colin DelValle (3rd-113), Brad Carroll (3rd-138), Jordan Holbrook (3rd-145), Brandon Boykin (3rd-152), Jordan Lacy (2nd-170), Cameron Connelly (4th-170), Drew Plumlee (4th-182), Cody Ball (2nd-220), and Mark Tulloch (3rd-285).

Edgewood Invitational: Dixie finished second to Simon Kenton at Edgewood with Edgewood, Miamisburg and Carlisle rounding out the top five.

Carlisle wrestled without Jason Sandlin on the weekend.

In the marquee match up of the finals, Jimmy Sandlin of Carlisle defeated Dixie’s Cole Vencill 10-5 in the finals.

Miamisburg’s returning state qualifiers Jordan Branham (138) and Kyle Schmidt (170) both claimed titles for the Vikings.

Ship them to me: A lot of newspapers are doing less wrestling coverage than in the old days and in many cases school sites are very antiquated. Sometimes, it makes finding results impossible without a Sherpa. If you got results, I invite you to share them with me. (Email: ksjcummings@sbcglobal.net)
