Michigan State picked up its 15th commitment in the 2013 recruiting class Saturday in Toledo (Ohio) Ottawa Hills senior kicker Michael Geiger.
A former Boston College commit, Geiger visited MSU early Saturday to
watch the Spartans’ first bowl practice. After practice was over coach Mark Dantonio met with Geiger and his parents, Jim and Mary Geiger, in his office.

“I’ve
committed to Michigan State,” Geiger said. “I’m very excited to be a
part of the Spartan family. I just felt in my heart that Michigan State
was the best fit.”

247Sports ranks Geiger the No. 1 kicker in the 2013 class.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Geiger committed to Boston College back in June under then-head coach Frank Spaziani.
The Eagles later fired Spaziani after winning just two games in 2012.
During every coaching transition, some players who were once committed
to a school will look elsewhere with a new head coach in place. Such is
the case at Boston College, which hired Steve Addazio Tuesday.

Geiger received a visit from MSU special teams coordinator Mike Tressel after Spaziani was fired, while Geiger later informed Addazio he would be taking a visit to East Lansing.

“I was honest with coach Addazio. I told him I was interested in a
few other schools,” Geiger said. “Then I explained to him that I was
very interested in Michigan State and was planning on visiting there. He
told me that it was okay to visit.”

Geiger camped at MSU this summer and has since been the top
kicker on the Spartans’ recruiting board. At the time MSU was unsure if
it was planning to offer a scholarship to a kicker in the 2013 class.
MSU’s staff evaluated its roster and decided to go forward and offer a
kicker in the class, while Geiger was MSU’s No. 1 target.

“Both coach Tressel and coach Dantonio told me that they had
evaluated everyone and decided to take a kicker in this year’s class,”
Geiger said. “Then coach Dantonio told me they were going to offer me
and I was ready to accept.”

Geiger is rated a three-star prospect and carries an 80.19 247Composite ranking.
