Yep? Final Scores? Yep…it’s all here.

What We Learned

1. Mentor can score (big wins): In back-to-back wins over St. Edward and St. Ignatius, the Cardinals slapped 120 points on Northeast Ohio’s parochial giants. In its 57-56 win over the Wildcats in the D-I Region 1 final, Mentor also got some sweet redemption by winning the game on a 2-point conversion. In the 2006 state final, the Cardinals lost to Hilliard Davidson on a 2-point attempt. Seniro QB Mitch Trubisky has separated himself from the other Mr. Football contenders and gashed the Wildcats for 411 yards and two TDs on 25-of-40 passing. He also ran for 138 yards and two TDs. Bet the North Carolina coaching staff (he’s a Tarheel commit) is going to be in constant contact with Trubisky – his stock has skyrocketed in three weeks.

2. Coldwater gets defensive: Playing in their sixth straight regional final, the Cavaliers won their fourth straight with a 20-0 decision over Covington in the D-V Region 20 final. Coming into the game, Covington was averaging 51.6 points per game and had scored 620 points this season, which ranks No. 8 all-time in state history for a single-season. The Buccs had also set program records for rushing yards and total yards in a season. And Coldwater shut them out. The Cavs have allowed 83 points this season, including 32 total during an 8-game MAC slate. Kenton (22) and West Liberty-Salem (22) account for over half the total.

3. Kirtland can rebound: Trailing Youngstown Ursuline 24-0 at halftime and with just 23 yards of offense, Kirtland’s title defense looked to be lights out. That’s when the Hornets flipped the switch. Kirtland outscored the Irish 38-13 in the second half and won the D-V Region 17 title 38-37. Sophomore RB Adam Hess keyed the comeback with three TDs and 99 yards rushing in the second half. Kirtland converted four 2-point conversions.

4. Thurgood Marshall is on a mission: The Cougars became the first Dayton City League school to win a regional football title with their 60-20 win over Athens in the D-III Region 12 final. Question…Can anyone stop Marshall? In three playoff games the Cougars have scored 60, 68 and 67 points. Against Athens, Marshall had 654 yards rushing. Senior RB Denzel Norvell led the way with 302 yards and five TDs on 27 carries.

Of Note

*Akron SVSM won its ninth regional title and first since 2001 with an impressive 34-7 victory over Chagrin Falls in D-III Region 9. The Irish had six sacks

*Coming into this season, Pickerington North had never won a playoff game. Now the Panthers are one win from the D-I state final. Pick North beat Hilliard Davidson 21-0 in the D-I Region 3 final. It’s the second straight year a team from Pickerington has won the Region 3 title. Last year Pickerington Central lost in the D-I state final.
