BIGGEST SURPRISE IN WEEK 2
Liberty-Benton bounces LCC again: For the second straight season Lima Central Catholic couldn’t figure out Liberty-Benton. The Eagles beat the T-Birds 45-35 in last year’s regional quarterfinals and survived again this season 24-17 in OT in the Region 18 semifinals. After QB Mitch Linhart ran for a TD and kicked the PAT in OT, L-B forced a fumble and recovered in the end zone to seal the win.
BIGGEST SURPRISE TEAM LEFT
Liberty Union: The Lions finished 8-2 twice in the last three years but that wasn’t good enough to get them into the postseason. This year it was. LU started 3-2 but since then has rattled off seven straight wins. The Lions are in the regional final for the first time since 2008 (when they beat Ready) and will face Lucasville Valley in the Region 19 final. The Indians are making thier second straight regional final appearance. Valley lost to Wynford 54-48 in OT last year.
BEST REGIONAL FINAL GAME
Kirtland (12-0) vs. Youngstown Ursuline (8-4): No offense to Liberty Union or Lucasville Valley but this game basically boils down to a state semifinal. The winner will be heavily favored next week. Kirtland is the defending state champion and Ursuline played in four straight D-V title games from 2010-2007. The Irish were state champions from 2010-2008. This is the teams third meeting in the regional final in five years. Ursuline beat Kirtland 48-0 in 2010 and 18-17 in 2008.
