Division VI Playoff Preview & Picks
Delphos St. John’s, McComb, Marion Local, Minster
KEEP AN EYE ON:
St. Henry, Mogadore, Ada
Danville, Malvern, Newark Catholic
BIGGEST SURPRISE IN WEEK 1 The
BEST REGIONAL SEMIFINAL GAME: Minster (9-2) vs. Maria Stein Marion Local (9-2) at Piqua Alexander Stadium-Purk Field
Despite the fact both these teams are in the MAC, they didn’t play one another in the regular season due to the conference’s rotating schedule. The playoffs however are a different story. This is the third straight season Minster and Marion Local will meet in the playoffs. They split the previous two. Minster senior QB Adam Niemeyer is headed to Ohio State on a baseball ride and junior TE Ethan Wolf has offers from Toledo, Illinois, Ohio, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Akron and Pitt. Marion Local junior QB Adam Bertke is a D-I recruit.
*Ada (10-1) vs. St. Henry (8-3) at Lima Stadium: If it wasn’t for the MAC, Ada may have multiple small school state titles. The Bulldogs have one the best and most consistent D-VI programs in Ohio and if they were on the other side of the state probably would have played in a couple state finals the last 10 years. As is, Ada knows it has to get through MAC teams to make state. This week they get their first test in St. Henry. Should the Bulldogs win, they get the winner of Marion Local-Minster next week.
*Danville (10-1) vs. Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans (8-3) at Gahanna Lincoln Stadium: This is the fourth meeting between the teams in two years. Danville won last year’s regular season meeting, but Rosecrans has won the last two – including last year’s regional quarterfinal game and this year’s Week 2 contest.
*Newark Catholic (9-2) vs. Glouster Trimble (10-1) at Sheridan Paul Culver Jr. Stadium: Trimble touts one of the state’s best small school defenses. The Tomcats went over 24 straight quarters this year (a span of full six games) without allowing a point. Since starting 1-1, Trimble has allowed 20 points in nine games. Newark Catholic is an entirely different animal than what the Tomcats have seen to date. Keep an eye on NC senior RB/DB Kevin Bourne. He’s special.
