KEEP AN EYE ON:
Columbiana Crestview, Liberty Union
Columbia Station Columbia, Liberty-Benton, Lucasville Valley
BIGGEST SURPRISE IN WEEK 1
Region 17: We tabbed this region the toughest in D-V last week and it didn’t disappoint. Consider…St. Thomas Aquinas scored 50 points, Garaway scored 48 points and both lost. Columbiana Crestview survived Aquinas 51-50 and Ursuline outscored Garaway 64-48. Kirtland and Cuyahoga Heights scored 49 and 42 points, respectively, to win their games. Defense?
BEST REGIONAL SEMIFINAL GAME: Hamler Patrick Henry (9-2) vs. Columbia Station Columbia (10-1) at Fremont Ross Harmon Field at Don Paul Stadium
Columbia draws its second straight Northwest Ohio Athletic League team. Last week the Raiders survived Archbold, 39-34, and now try their luck against playoff regular Patrick Henry. The Patriots lost to Archbold 55-21 in Week 8 but don’t let that fool you. PH beat a solid Northwood team last week and had undefeated Bryan down late before a miraculous Golden Bears comeback shocked the Pats in Week 7 (which could have cause a Week 8 hangover). Keep an eye on Columbia QB Jay Banyasz. The junior ran for four TDs last week and threw for two more.
* Lima Central Catholic (11-0) vs. Findlay Liberty-Benton (10-1) at Wapakoneta Harmon Field: LCC’s only loss in its last 22 games is to Liberty-Benton in last year’s regional quarterfinals. The T-Birds get a chance at revenge.
* Kirtland (11-0) vs. Columbiana Crestview (11-0) at Warren G. Harding Mollenkopf Stadium: Most people expect a Kirtland-Ursuline final in Region 17. Crestview is a legit threat to the hierarchy though.
