Division II Playoff Preview & Picks
Aurora, Columbian, Toledo Central Catholic, Trotwood-Madison
KEEP AN EYE ON:
Winton Woods, Turpin, New Albany, Tri-Valley
Kent Roosevelt, Marion-Franklin, Avon
BIGGEST SURPRISE IN WEEK 1
Canal Winchester over Zanesville: This is more of a statewide surprise as opposed to a personal one. We said this game would be close and it was – so close that Canal won. A close second place? Kenston over Tallmadge 26-23. Again, of a statewide surprise as opposed to a personal one.
BEST REGIONAL SEMIFINAL GAME: Winton Woods (8-3) vs. Trotwood-Madison (9-2) at Trenton Edgewood
This is a big-time tilt. Both program’s have won D-II state titles since 2009 and the winner of this will have a good chance of adding another. The last three D-II state championship games have included one of these schools.
* Kent Roosevelt (10-1) vs. 3 Aurora (10-1) at Hudson Memorial Stadium-Murdough Field: Offense vs defense. Roosevelt rallies behind senior QB Tra’von Chapman (Pitt), while Aurora’s defense is led by senior LBs Zachary Smierciak (Miami, Ohio) and Zach Quinn (Toledo).
* Dresden Tri-Valley (11-0) vs. New Albany (9-2) at Zanesville Sulsberger: TV has to be suffering from a case of déjà vu. Last year the Scotties beat Tecumseh in the first round of the playoffs before facing New Albany in the regional semifinals. This year, TV beat Tecumseh in the first round again and now faces NA in the regional semifinals again. TV beat NA 24-7 at this stage last year.
* Chagrin Falls Kenston (7-4) vs. Chardon (9-2) at Mentor Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium: Chardon beat Kenston 29-28 in Week 2.
