BIGGEST SURPRISE IN WEEK 1
Hilliard Davidson beats Dublin Coffman: This week I talked to Covington High School football coach David Miller Jr. who spent time with the HD coaching staff this summer. Miller had nothing but praise for Davidson head coach Brian White and said the Wildcats were the epitome of “technically sound” and “team” football. Miller molded his squad after Davidson’s and this season the Buccs have set school records for total yards (5,249), rushing yards (5,035) and points (598) in a season. Davidson carries that kind of influence. The Wildcats won two state titles and took one step closer towards a third with a 17-14 win over host Dublin Coffman. The victory avenged a 33-10 loss to Coffman on the same field in Week 4.
BEST REGIONAL SEMIFINAL GAME: Massillon Washington (10-1) vs. Canton McKinley (8-2), Region 2
No Brainer. The country’s best high school football rivalry writes another chapter as the Tigers and Bulldogs meet for the second time in three weeks. Massillon won the annual Week 10 meeting 37-29. This edition will take place at Kent State’s Dix Stadium.
* Lakewood St. Edward (11-0) vs. Mentor (10-1) at Parma Byers Field: En route to its 2010 D-I state title, St. Edward beat Mentor 35-21 in the regional quarterfinals. This year the Eagles try their luck against the Cardinals and Mr. Football candidate Mitch Trubisky in Round 2. A senior QB headed to North Carolina, Trubisky completed 12 of his first 13 passes for 269 yards and five TDs in the first half of a 45-35 win over Warren Harding last week.
* Hilliard Darby (11-0) vs. 4 Pickerington North (10-1) at Gahanna Lincoln Stadium: The top-ranked team in Columbus nine weeks out of ten (Pick North) takes on the top-ranked team in the final Central Ohio poll (Darby).
