Division V Playoff Preview & Picks
Coldwater, Kirtland, Ursuline, Lima Central Catholic
KEEP AN EYE ON:
Columbiana Crestview, Northwood, St. Thomas Aquinas
Liberty Union, Liberty-Benton, Lucasville Valley, Wheelersburg
TOUGHEST REGION: Region 17
There are five teams in this region ranked in the top eight of the final Ohio National Guard JJHuddle D-V Power Poll: Kirtland (No. 2), Ursuline (No. 4), Garaway (No. 6), St. Thomas Aquinas (No. 7) and Columbiana Crestview (No. 8). Also in the mix is Cuyahoga Heights.
BEST FIRST ROUND GAME: 7 Ursuline at 2 Garaway, Region 17
Garaway is the higher seed but the Pirates enter as the underdog against Ursuline. Don’t be fooled by the Irish’s 6-4 record – their four losses are to St. Edward, Zanesville, Akron SVSM and Erie (Pa.) Cathedral Prep. Still, Garaway has the tools to get the win. Senior QB Tyler Walter has thrown for 2,715 yards and 35 TDs this season. He’s also run for 495 yards and six TDs. Ursuline is looking to advance to its fifth state final in six years.
*6 Liberty Union (8-2) at 3 Wheelersburg (8-2), Region 19
Liberty Union won its final five games come out of nowhere and earn a playoff berth. The Lions rely on a heavy run game and a stunting defense that’s forced 19 interceptions this season. Wheelersburg counters with one of the best small school QBS in Ohio – junior Eddie Miller. Miller has thrown for 1,986 yards and 23 TDs and run for 965 yards and 14 TDs.
*6 Dixie (7-3) at 3 Covington (10-0), Region 20
Talk about opposites. Dixie is making its first appearance in the playoffs and is in the midst of just its second winning season since 1983. Covington is in the playoffs for the 17th time. Dixie is led by a standout senior class that includes RB Ryan Jordan and QB Luke Bowling. Covington has scored 543 points this season.
