Division III Playoff Preview & Picks
Alter, Dayton Thurgood Marshall, Chagrin Falls, Akron SVSM
KEEP AN EYE ON:
Bellevue, Watterson, Dover, NDCL
Napoleon, Bryan, Marlington, Steubenville
TOUGHEST REGION: Region 10
Seven of the eight teams in this group have a legit shot at winning the regional title. River Valley is the lone question. Five of the teams have nine or more wins and four are ranked in the final Ohio National Guard JJHuddle D-III Power Poll: Bellevue (No. 4), Watterson (No. 6), Bryan (No. 7) and Napoleon (No. 8). Elida beat Bellevue 54-20 in the first round last year and Urbana and Perkins are formidable in their own right.
BEST FIRST ROUND GAME: Watterson at Bryan, Region 10
Watterson is the best D-III team in Central Ohio, but thanks to the OHSAA’s playoff region alignments, the Eagles will have to travel three hours and 15 minutes to prove their worth. Watterson is at Bryan, which is in Williams County and less than 20 miles from Indiana and Michigan. Bryan is 170 miles from Columbus. The Golden Bears are one of Ohio’s best surprises this season after winning the Northwest Ohio Athletic League for the first time since 1986 and scoring a school-record 441 points. Watterson, however, is no stranger to long road trips. The Eagles played at Whitehouse Anthony Wayne, Ironton, Hamilton and Winton Woods this season.
*Granville (9-1) at Dover (8-2), Region 11
Points. And Passing. Expect a lot. Dover averages 38.5 points per game, while Granville averages 35.
*6 Perkins (9-1) at 3 Urbana (9-1), Region 10
How about the turnaround Perkins has made? The Pirates went from 2-8 last year to Sandusky Bay Conference champions. Hats off to head coach Jason Ziegler. Urbana won its third straight Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division title thanks in part to sophomore QB Nathan Mays who has thrown for 58 TDs and nine INTs in his two-year career.
