Noteworthy News:
2012 will be Coach Dan Johnson’s 28th season at LU and his 35th as a Head Coach. 2012 will be the final year for Liberty Union to compete in the Cardinal Division of the Mid State League. In 2013, LU will replace Canal Winchester in the Buckeye Division of the MSL. The 2011 season was LU’s sixth consecutive winning season. The last MSL championship and play-off appearance was 2008 when the Lions advanced to the Final Four and were defeated by State Champion Youngstown Ursaline.

Schedule: The 2012 schedule includes three 2011 playoff teams. Amanda-Clearcreek, West Jefferson, and Grandview Heights are well recognized programs. In order for LU to make the playoffs the Lions will have to defeat two of these three teams. Grandview Heights is the returning Cardinal Division Champion who was 10-0 and West Jefferson advanced to the Regional Finals in 2011.

Coach’s Quotes: “Liberty Union will be looking to fill the shoes of some great players from the 2011 team. All-Ohio Running back Josh Makuch was also the leading tackler at Inside Linebacker. In addition, three other two-way players and first team All MSL performers must be replaced (Andrew Vannatta WB/DB, Davon Donovan FB/ILB and Danny McCord TE/DE).”

“The entire offensive backfield will be replaced by potential starters: Jesse Shirey FB/TB, Jacob Basso TB and Justin Reeves WB. The quarterback position will be hotly contested by Austin Vannatta (Jr.) and Sam Bordner (So.) Defenslively the three top tacklers are gone. The top priority will be to fill the ILB spots. Jr’s Justin Barber, and Dustin Short will be battling for those spots.”

“Sophomores Adam Snyder and Bradon Powers have the potential to contribute.”

“As always avoiding key injuries will be key in putting together a great season in 2012.”
