Noteworthy News: The Redmen suffered their first losing season in head coach Jake Bruner’s seven-year tenure last year. Youth, injuries and a brutal schedule were the main culprits. This year youth is a concern again although the future looks bright. Bucyrus has just 10 seniors but has nearly 60 combined juniors and sophomores. Purcell (two-time All-NCC) has a chance to be the program’s career receptions leader and is coming off a season in which he caught 30 passes, rushed for 500 yards and made 80 tackles. Widman and Williams are two-year starters on the lines and team captains. Musick is one of the school’s best kickers ever. Juniors expected to make an impact include OL/DL Noah Graves (6-0, 230), RB/DB Tyler Zehring (5-9, 160) and RB/LB Colin Light (5-10, 185). Bruner (42-28) needs just one win to become the program’s all-time leader in coaching wins. “We ended up starting two freshman on defense last year and several sophomores, but we will be playing a lot of youth on Friday nights this year again,” Bruner said. “Our schedule is extremely tough, but the future is really bright.” Prior to last years 1-9 season, the Redmen’s last four seasons (2007-2010) they where 30-10, and last five seasons they where 36-14. Which is the most wins in and 5 year, 4 year, 3 year period in history of Redmen Football.

Schedule: It’s once again brutal.  Bruner said last years schedule was the team’s toughest since 1997. And the numbers agree. Bucyrus lost to two teams that made Final Fours (Wynford and Buckeye Central) and three others that went 8-2 or better (Hillsdale, Galion and Ontario).

Coaches Quotes: “We suffered our first losing season in my tenure at Bucyrus last year and despite our youth and injuries we where really disappointed with our results. We return only 10 seniors and as a group they have limited expeierence and we will have a lot of youth on the field, but we do have 20 plus juniors and 30 plus sophomores that have been really sucessful and many did play last year. We ended up starting two freshman on defense last year and several sophomores, but we will be playing a lot of youth on Friday nights this year again. Our schedule is extremely tough, but the future is really bright and the kids have worked really hard in the off-season.”
