Division II Semifinals: Dayton Dunbar advances to fourth final in seven years, Elida up next

Dayton Dunbar is in the state tournament for the fifth time in eight years.

The Division II state semifinals kicked off the second day of the 90th annual OHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament on Friday. No. 1 and undefeated Dunbar was in the field for the fifth time in eight years. Mentor Lake Catholic, St. Clairsville and Elida were in the field for the first time ever. Dayton Dunbar 75, Mentor Lake Catholic 60

Friday’s opener of the 2012 OHSAA State Boy’s Basketball Tournament featured No. 1 and undefeated Dayton Dunbar against a red hot Mentor Lake Catholic, who had won 16 consecutive contests. Whether you believe or not that all good things must come to an end, it did on Friday for Lake Catholic thanks to a 75-60 setback.

The Cougars (23-3) used a patient 2-3 zone to keep the high octane Wolverines under wraps for much of the first three quarters. Though, when Lake Catholic was forced to press and play man-to-man it was lights out courtesy of freshman guard Amos “AJ” Harris and senior guard Andre Yates.

Dunbar scored on 11 of its final 12 possessions as Harris and Yates breezed through the press and slashed through the Cougar half court defense leading to several easy buckets for everyone involved including a an off the backboard assist to Damarion Geter were a two-handed stuff.

Lake Catholic led 17-13 after one quarter thanks to 5-of-8 shooting, but Dunbar was able to grab the lead by half with a 17-11 second period advantage. Yates scored eight points in the quarter.

The Wolverines (27-0) increased their lead to 43-36 after three.

Dunbar shot 53 percent from the field for the contest led by Yates’ 26 points on 12-of-20 shooting. Senior Deontae “Teddy” Hawkins added 19 points and 12 boards and Harris tallied 11. Senior Gary Akbar contributed nine points and seven rebounds.

Lake Catholic got 14 points from Mike Whalen, 13 by leading scorer Joey Vuyancih, and 12 points and 11 rebounds from junior Mark Baniewicz. Danny Schweikert meshed 12 and snared 11 boards. Dunbar held Vuyancih to just 3-of-13 shooting.

*Player of the Game: Andre Yates scored 26 points on 12-of-20 shooting.

*Stat of the Game: Dunbar was just 2-of-19 from three-point range, but out pointed the Cougars 52-24 in the paint.

Elida 61, St. Clairsville 27

In the second Division II semifinal, St. Clairsville and Elida were both making its first state tournament appearance. However, Elida looked more than comfortable to be playing inside the Jerome Schottenstein Center, while St. Clairsville never was able to settle into the atmosphere.

Elida opened the game was a close to perfect set play off the opening tip, which led to a lob pass and the receiving end was 6-6 Reggie McAdams for a two-handed jam. The Bulldogs never looked back en route to a 61-27 victory over the Red Devils.

Elida’s perimeter length and defensive pressure forced St. Clairsville into a 0-of-11 first quarter shooting performance, which the Belmont County-based outfit down 15-0 after eight minutes.
 
Junior Danny Monteroso, who came into the game averaging 26.2 points per game, was held scoreless in the first half on just four shot attempts thanks to a terrific defensive effort from a lengthy Ebin Stratton.

Adam Jeffries connected on a three-point goal with 6:18 to go in the half to put St. Clairsville on the board, but Elida was able maintain its lead despite McAdams being in foul trouble.

The Bulldogs (24-3) opened their lead to 48-20 after three quarters thanks to a 22-9 advantage in the period. Senior Cory Royster dominated the paint scoring 10 points in the stanza.

Royster finished with 18 points and 18 rebounds and McAdams added 17 and nine. Mike McDonald provided a huge spark off the bench for the winners  with nine points, four rebounds, and four steals.

St. Clairsville (23-3) got nine points from junior Jerrid Marhefka and eight from Jeffries. Monteroso ended his afternoon with just six points on 3-of-10 shooting.

The Red Devils shot just 19 percent from the field including a 4-of-29 showing behind the arc. Elida scored 21 points off turnovers to St. Clairsville’s 3 and owned a 17-1 advantage on bench points.

*Player of the Game:
Cory Royster scored 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting and snared 18 boards.

*Stat of the Game: Elida out scored St. Clairsville in the paint, 44-4.
