Boys Basketball Sectional play wrapped this past week and district play started on Sunday. This week we go full steam ahead into districts and by Saturday close we will have 16 teams left in each division (64 in all). It takes two-plus months to play the regular season, but only three weeks to dispatch over 700 teams during tournament play. Here’s who did what…

Sectional play wrapped up this past week of the 2012 OHSAA Boy’s State Basketball Tournament, and district play started on Sunday for some. This week we will go full steam ahead into district play and by Saturday night we will be left with 16 teams in each respective division (64 in all). It takes us two-plus months to get through the regular season, but only three weeks to dispatch over 700 teams during tournament play.

News, Notes & Stats:

*Freshman Luke Kennard had the stat line of the week scoring 33 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing out six assists in a 78-75 triple overtime victory against Dayton CJ. Kennard scored 12 points in the three extra sessions.

*Michigan State signee Kenny Kaminski has returned from a shoulder injury making Medina a legitimate threat at the Copley District. Kaminski hadn’t played a second before the tournament. Medina upset Brunswick this past week.

*Junior Danny Monteroso scored 40 points leading St. Clairsville to the district title game where it will face East Liverpool in a rematch of the OVAC 4A Championship Game won by the Red Devils.

*Cincinnati Roger Bacon had a wild week enjoying a 60-54 win over Shroder before triumphing in a thrilling 50-49 contest against Cincinnati NCH. Jake Westerfeld scored the game winning basket and sophomores Carlas Jackson (18) and Austin Frentos combine for 28 points.

*Some big points where put up this past week with Mentor Lake Catholic scoring 112 points, Mentor, Taft, and Richmond Heights all scoring 110, Northland and St. Edward erupting for 103, and Mentor hanging an 102 later in the week. All were winners.

Looking ahead to this week:

Division I
WNorwalk vs. Mansfield Senior – Norwalk is unbeaten, but this will be the best team it has played.
Toledo St. John’s vs. Toledo Whitmer –
the rubber match between two of Toledo’s best.
Cleveland St. Ignatius vs. Shaker Heights –
two contrasting styles.
Garfield Heights vs. Cleveland Heights –
Garfield is playing at a high level right now.
Middletown vs. Princeton –
Josh Andrews making another appearance against his former school.
Pickerington Central vs. Westerville South –
setting up to be one of the best games in Ohio.
Westerville North vs. Newark –
another great OCC match up.

Division II
University School vs. Mentor Lake Catholic – Lake Catholic likely wins, but Barham could explode.
Akron East vs. CVCA – Davonte Brunson and Bob Peters should put on a show.
Bishop Hartley vs. Bishop Watterson – Watterson won both regular season games, but a third?
Defiance vs. Toledo Scott – this could be a close contest with contrasting styles.
Wauseon vs. Perkins – another solid game in NW Ohio.
Lexington vs. Bath – can Bath do it again following its marathon with Van Wert.
St. Clairsville vs. East Liverpool – rematch of a 79-64 St. Clairsville win.
Fairland vs. Waverly – Fairland is coming off an upset of Warren, so can they do it again?
Jonathan Alder vs. Centennial – Alder should be on upset alert.
Dunbar vs. Aiken – Dunbar should win, but the talent on the floor will be outstanding.
Trotwood-Madison vs. Thurgood Marshall – this will be fun.

Division III
Hillsdale vs. Orrville – can Orrville make another run despite a below average record?
Berkshire vs. LaBrae –
LaBrae rolled in the first match up, but that was quite a while ago.
Newton Falls vs. Ursuline –
can Cody Dillon carry Newton Falls to another round?
Fort Frye vs. Garaway –
neither will be confused with the great teams of the past, but still should be a quality match up.
Summit CD vs. Miami East –
Summit will be challenged here, but should move on.
Roger Bacon vs. Bishop Fenwick –
the GCL meets up in tournament play, so low scoring is expected.
Versailles vs. Badin –
can Badin grind out another win?

Division IV
Bishop Rosecrans vs. Malvern – these two are no strangers come tournament time. Should be classic.
Cleveland VASJ vs. Dalton –
VASJ may be too much here.
Richmond Heights vs. Cuyahoga Heights –
Richmond Heights is very, very good.
Toledo MVCD vs. Tiffin Calvert –
MVCD has the talent to make a deep run.
Ada vs. Columbus Grove –
real competitive contest here.
Racine Southern vs. Manchester-
should be the best DIV game in Southeast Ohio.
Wellington vs. Shekinah Christian –
Shekinah is a great story, but does the ride end here?
Fort Recovery vs. Delphos St. John’s –
Fort will be pushed to the end in this one.
Lockland vs. Russia –
Lockland has the talent to make it to Columbus.
Jackson Center vs. Tri-Village –
can JC keep the dream season alive?
