When Urban Meyer held his first Ohio State junior day on Jan. 29, a
number of new scholarship offers were handed out. One of those went to
Howland running back DeVeon Smith.

The
5-foot-11 and 210-pound Smith has been on the Howland varsity since his
freshman year when he accounted for 982 all-purpose years and 12
touchdowns. Smith rushed for 1,800 yards his sophomore season.

Smith was spectacular during his junior season. In 10 games he rushed for 2,159 yards and had 25 touchdowns.

The scholarship offer from Ohio State was Smith’s fourth. The Buckeyes joined Michigan, Indiana and Bowling Green.

“(Ohio State’s) junior day was fun,” Smith said. “I got an offer
from coach (Stan) Drayton. He told me I have an offer from Ohio State.
He said I’m the type of running back they want at Ohio State. He said
they love the passion I have for the sport. He said my heart is in it.”

Smith was excited about the Buckeyes’ offer and enjoyed meeting Meyer.

“I really enjoyed myself,” Smith said. “I talked to coach Meyer.
He’s a nice guy. He’s really funny. We seemed to get along well. We had a
connection.”

Smith said he liked seeing the Ohio State facilities and enjoyed the Buckeye basketball team’s victory over Michigan.

“Ohio State is definitely one of my top choices,” Smith said. “I
was really excited when coach Drayton offered me. I told him I’m really
interested in Ohio State.”

Kurelic’s Comment: Smith is not ready to make a decision
at this point. But when he is ready I think this batle comes down to
Ohio State or Michigan.
