Middletown five-star athlete Jalin Marshall
was ready to commit to Ohio State for weeks, and tried to make it until
Tuesday morning, wanting to announce his verbal on his father’s
birthday.

However,
with the good news beginning to get out an evening early, Marshall gave
247Sports the thumbs up to run this story about his pledge.

There’s no doubt Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer is sharing in the
festivities as he just landed his second blue-chipper in the class of
2013.

Ranked as the nation’s top athlete and the No. 5 prospect overall, the 6-foot, 190-pound Marshall joins four-star safety Cameron Burrows in giving his word to Ohio State, choosing the Buckeyes over offers from the likes of Notre Dame and Tennessee.

“It was just somewhere I always wanted to be, and it’s close to
home, and I really built a relationship with the coaching staff and
players,” Marshall told 247Sports over the weekend.

During the fall, Ohio State and Notre Dame were running even for
Marshall’s services, but when former Irish assistant coach Tim Hinton
left South Bend for a job with the Buckeyes, it tipped the scales in the
home-state school’s favor.

“Our relationship carried on to when Coach Hinton got to Ohio
State, and it meant a lot,” Marshall said, adding that he’s had regular
conversation with Meyer as well. “They all seem to have a liking of me
and care for me a lot.”

As a junior, Marshall rushed for 1,972 yards and 20 touchdowns,
and he also passed for 781 yards and six more scores. He will begin his
Ohio State career as a quarterback, which is very important to him.

“It meant a lot to me for them to give me an opportunity like
this,” Marshall said. “Every school is saying that, but I felt like this
was more sincere.”

Alabama is off to a fast start recruiting with seven commits in
the class of 2013, but Marshall thinks it won’t be long for Ohio State
to be on a similar pace with the Crimson Tide for the nation’s top haul.

“I feel it’s going to be a big recruiting class, especially with
me and Cam starting it,” Marshall said. “Ohio State is on track to get a
lot of great players.”

For the elder Marshall, what a great way to begin his birthday.
