most complete statewide recap…
So who is the best 1-3 team in the state? My vote goes to Youngstown Ursuline, which just notched its first win with a 13-9 victory at Zanesville. The Irish, ranked No. 1 in the Muscle Milk/JJHuddle Division V Power Poll, had lost previously to Red Lion Christian (Del.), Mentor and Mentor Lake Catholic.
Ursuline, which is now No. 13 in Region 17 computer points, still has a treacherous schedule ahead of it. The Irish are looking for their fourth straight D-V state title and fifth straight appearance in the championship game. The next two weeks Ursuline hosts Steubenville (4-0) and St. Edward (4-0), respectively. After what look like “wins” in Weeks 7 and 8 against St. Peter’s Prep (NJ) and Cleveland East Tech, the Irish close with rivals Mooney and Akron SVSM.
The question is can Ursuline get into the D-V playoffs with a record that could be 3-7?
Other 1-3 teams of note? How about:
St. Henry: The Redskins – the preseason No. 1 team in the Muscle Milke/JJHuddle D-VI Power Poll – have lost to Marion Pleasant (4-0), Eaton (3-1) and Coldwater (3-1). The next four weeks St. Henry faces in succession Delphos St. Johns (away), Marion Local (home), Minster (home) and Anna (away). The Skins finish the season hosting Versailles. Wow.
Loudonville: The Red Birds were arguably the best 0-3 D-V team in the state before stamping themselves as the best 1-3 team following a 35-17 win over Danville, which was ranked No. 2 in the D-VI AP State Poll. Loudonville’s losses (all by single-digits) have come at the hands of Ontario (4-0), Ashland Crestview (4-0) and Jeromesville Hillsdale (4-0). This week Loudonville faces Johnstown-Monroe (4-0). Its their fifth undefeated opponent in as many weeks.
Winton Woods: The D-II Cincinnati power and recent state champion (2009) has dropped games to Lakota East (triple OT), Middletown and Columbus Watterson by a combined 11 points.
Akron Buchtel: The defending D-III state runner-up has lost games to Massillon Washington (3-1), Solon (4-0) and Steubenville (4-0).
