Friday’s Regional Semifinals: Final scores and what we learned

The second weekend of the Ohio High School Football Playoffs is underway
and 24 more teams saw their season end Friday. Upsets? Yep. Shockers?
Yep? Final Scores? Yep…it’s all here.

We Learned…

1. A lot can happen in 4 Seconds: Three D-III regional semifinals were decided in the final four seconds. Youngstown Mooney hit a 30-yard field goal with four seconds left to beat Steubenville 24-22 in Region 11, while Springfield Shawnee stopped Thurgood Marshall on second and goal from the 2-yardline on the final play to win 20-13 in Region 12. The Cougars snapped the ball with 4.2 seconds left.

Not to be outdone, Elida won its Region 10 semifinal over Columbus DeSales 24-21 on a 27-yard field goal with 2.1 seconds left.

2. Publics can hold their own: On the night public schools went 3-2 in head-to-head games against private schools. Avon beat Toledo Central Catholic (49-28) in D-II, Elida beat Columbus DeSales (24-21) in D-III and Columbiana Crestview beat Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas (41-20) in D-V. Private schools that scored victories were Walsh Jesuit over Kent Roosevelt (49-14) in D-II and Youngstown Mooney over Steubenville (24-21) in D-III.

3. All Chagrin Falls does in the postseason is win: Despite moving up a Division from IV to III, Chagrin Falls advanced to its third straight regional final with a 24-6 win over Ravenna. The Tigers are 11-3 in the playoffs the last four years and have played in back-to-back D-IV state finals.

4. Déjà vu…Trotwood-Madison vs Kings II: No. 1 ranked Trotwood and No. 2 Kings will hook up for the second straight year in the Region 8 final. Both are undefeated. Trotwood beat Wapakoneta 27-6 in the semis, while Kings beat Turpin 24-0. Last year Trotwood beat Kings 53-24.

5. Déjà vu II …Coldwater vs West Jefferson II: Coldwater and West Jefferson will meet in the Region 20 final for the second straight season. Last year Coldwater won the meeting 44-12 en route to its second straight D-V state final.
