The news of Jim
resignation rocked Lakewood St. Edward’s Kyle Kalis, the No. 1 junior offensive lineman in Ohio and arguably the Buckeyes’ top 2012 commitment. Said Kalis: “I thought – ‘with Tressel gone I’m gone.’ I was going to call
coach (Luke) Fickell and de-commit.” What happened?
my mom told me the news the first thing I thought was pure shock,”
Kalis said. “I was furious. I had a deep missing feeling. My heart just
plummeted. My head was spinning 100 miles per hour.
“I thought – ‘with Tressel gone I’m gone.’ I was going to call
coach (Luke) Fickell and de-commit.”
Kalis waited until this afternoon to make the call to Fickell.
“I talked to him for an hour straight,” Kalis said. “By the time
we were done I was super confident in him and Ohio State. I’m 100% Ohio
State. After talking to him I forgot all about de-committing. Everything
feels good. It’s like a weight is off my shoulders. Coach Fickell is
“Coach Fickell reminds me of coach Tressel, but if someone is
messing up he will get after their butts. I fell in love with coach
Fickell. I am really fired up.”
Kalis said at least 15 schools have been in contact already and
he basically told them “we’ll see.”
However, Kalis now plans to have his coach tell all other
schools, ‘thanks but no thanks.’
When asked what Fickell told him that was so convincing, Kalis
said, “Coach Fickell told me we will be bigger, faster and stronger. I
am even more Ohio State now. I am really pumped up.
“As long as coach Fickell is there I am all Ohio State. There is
going to be a big push for him as the coach.”
The 6-foot-5 and 300-pound Kalis committed to Ohio State last
September. He is a super right tackle and a potential All-American.
Kalis helped lead St. Edward to a 15-0 record and the Division 1 state
title last season.
Bill Kurelic’s Comment: Fickell is known to be a very good
recruiter and this is his first victory as the Buckeyes’ coach. It is
absolutely a huge win for Fickell and the Bucks.
