The Ohio State staff is considering signing a punter or kicker for
their 2012 recruiting class, or someone who can perhaps do both duties.
Enter Gahanna Lincoln’s Tyler Grassman.

The
6-foot-1 and 185-pound Grassman has handled both the punting and
kicking duties for the Lions since the beginning of his sophomore
season.

Grassman made 4 of 6 field goals with a long of 30 yards his
sophomore season. He made 31 of 31 extra points and had a 36 yard
punting average.

Grassman’s numbers improved his junior season as he made 7 of 12
field goals with a long of 43 yards. He hit on all 27 of his extra point
attempts and averaged 38 yards per punt. Of his 40 plus kickoffs 20
went for touchbacks.

“I look to hopefully kick and punt in college,” Grassman said. “But it could be just one of the two.”

Several Big Ten schools including Ohio State are showing interest in Grassman, as well as a number of the MAC schools.

“I’ve got Ohio State,” Grassman said. “They told me I’m in their
top two. Indiana told me (on Monday) I’m No. 1 on their board. They came
to our school. And I get letters from Toledo, Miami of Ohio, Penn State
and Purdue. Purdue said I’m in their top five.”

Grassman plans to hit the camp circuit next month in hopes of earning his first scholarship offer, and perhaps several offers.

“I’m going to Ohio State’s camp June 15-16,” Grassman said. “I’m
also going to Kentucky’s camp. They are going to scholarship a 2012 guy.
I’ll go to Indiana and Purdue’s camps. I’m waiting to hear from
Northwestern if they are offering a kicker and punter. And coaches from
Kent State and Miami of Ohio will be at Ohio State. I’ve heard Kent
State will probably offer.”

Grassman is being recruited by OSU assistants Greg Gillum and Paul Haynes.

When asked to names the schools he is highly interested in, Grassman said, “Mostly Indiana, Purdue and Ohio State.”

Kurelic’s Comment: Grassman and Ross Martin (Cuyahoga
Falls, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) are the top two candidates for a Buckeye offer
if the OSU staff decides to extend one to a punter or kicker.
