In a recent story we said Bedfrod junior DB Tyvis Powell
may be about to ‘blow-up’ on the recruiting
scene. That has now officially happened.

The Buckeyes offered Powell a scholarship this
evening and he couldn’t contain his excitement.

Jim Tressel
called and said he would like to see me in scarlet and gray,” Powell
said. “He said they offer the top guys in America and I’m one of them.
I’ve been waiting for this offer since I was a little kid. I got what I
wanted, an offer from Ohio State.”

When asked what he said to Tressel when the Buckeye boss offered
him, Powell said, “I told him I’m honored. It’s a great opportunity. I
would love to go down and play for the Buckeyes.”

However, Powell has not committed just yet.

“I have to talk to my mom,” he said. “Then I’ll make my decision.
Oh yes, Ohio State is No. 1 on my list.”

The 6-foot-4 and 185-pound Powell started four games at safety
his sophomore year. He played mostly safety during his junior season
though he did line up at cornerback a couple games.

“I want to be a cornerback (in college),” Powell said. “I want to
be a 6-foot-4 cornerback.”

Powell currently has 13 scholarship offers including Ohio State,
West Virginia, Minnesota and Cincinnati. Toledo, Akron, Ohio University,
Buffalo, Western Michigan and Ball State are some other schools that
have offered Powell.

Powell said he could commit to the Buckeyes within the next 48
hours.

Powell attended Ohio State’s spring game and the Bucks stopped at
his school a couple weeks ago. Coaches from Wisconsin, North Carolina
State, West Virginia, Western Michigan and Miami of Ohio have watched
Powell workout in the past few weeks.

In addition to being a very good football player, Powell is also
in very solid shape academically. His GPA is close to the 3.0 mark and
he scored an 18 on the ACT.

Bill Kurelic’s Comment: Powell texted me at 10:15 PM to say he
has talked to his mom and she has given him the green light to make his
decision. Powell’s current plan is to announce his choice sometime on
Friday.
