After signing two of the country’s top tight ends last recruiting
season in Nick
Vannett
(Westerville, Ohio/Central) and Jeff Heuerman
(Naples, Fla./Barron Collier), there is no sense of urgency for the Ohio
State staff to sign one this year.

But
if they do end up signing one, Blake Thomas
(Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) is very interested in being the guy.

The 6-foot-4 and 250-pound Thomas caught close to 30 passes for
300 yards with five touchdowns during his junior season. Thomas, who has
run the 40-yard dash in 4.75 seconds, is a very effective blocker with
good feet and good hands.

Thomas has scholarship offers from Boston College, Indiana,
Virginia, Cincinnati, Louisville, Connecticut, Bowling Green, Toledo and
Ohio University.

“I’m looking into all of them,” Thomas said. “I want to see what
they have to offer. I visited Boston College, and I’ll probably visit
Virginia and I might visit Cincinnati and Indiana too.”

There is one other school on Thomas’ list right now.

“I like Ohio State a lot,” he said. “I’d really like to get an
offer from them. I think I would fit into their offense well. I think I
can put on another 10 or 20 pounds and be their type of tight end.”

Though the Buckeyes have not offered Thomas a scholarship, they
are interested.

“I call their coach (Taver Johnson)
every week,” Thomas said. “I talk to the tight ends coach (John Peterson)
every once in awhile too. And I believe coach (Jim) Bollman is coming
(today).”

Thomas, who said the OSU coaches have indicated they may be
offering a tight end, attended a junior day at Ohio State during the
winter.

“I sat down with coach Peterson and he said I’m good enough to
play at Ohio State,” Thomas said.

When asked to name the schools he is most interested in, Thomas
said, “I would say the top three would be Boston College, Stanford and
Ohio State, but not in any order.”

Thomas plans to workout at the NIKE Camp at Ohio State May 21 and
Notre Dame’s camp in June. He also might attend a Michigan State camp
session.”

Bill Kurelic’s Comment: Thomas is one of those Ohio kids that
has grown up hoping to have a chance to be a Buckeye. He is someone to
keep an eye on if in fact the Buckeyes decide to take a tight end in
this class.
