Running back William Mahone
(Austintown, Ohio/Fitch) did not put up spectacular numbers during his
junior season, but plenty of recruiters are sold on him.

Include
the Michigan State staff among them. Mahone has 20 scholarship offers
including some of the top schools in this part of the country. Mahone’s
list of offers includes Michigan State, Penn State, Notre Dame, Iowa,
Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, Pitt, West Virginia,
Cincinnati, Vanderbilt and a host of MAC schools.

“I’m kind of concentrating on the BCS schools right now,” Mahone
said. “I camped at Cincinnati and I’ve been to Michigan State, Penn
State, Pitt and West Virginia. I just need to get to all the schools.”

Mahone would like to get to as many of the other schools that
have offered as soon as he can.

“I plan on getting to Boston College, Notre Dame and Iowa – I
have family out in Iowa,” Mahone said. “And I want to get back to
Michigan State. I want to get to all those schools this summer, and
Northwestern too. They want me to come out June 12. I’ll probably get
out there and Notre Dame at the same time.”

The fact that Mahone wants to get back to Michigan State for a
second visit bodes well for the Spartans.

“Coach (Pat) Narduzzi was at the school (Wednesday),” Mahone
said. “I said ‘Hello’ to him. I called him when I got home and we had a
good talk. I went to camp there last summer. I really want to get up
there and see the campus this time.”

The 5-foot-11 and 205-pound Mahone shared carries with a senior
running back last season and rushed for 700 yards on just 81 carries. He
had eight rushing touchdowns, two receiving and two on kickoff returns.

When asked which schools he is most interested in, Mahone said,
“The schools I’ve been to have an edge, but I don’t have a favorite
right now.

“I would like to decide before the football season. But if I
don’t I’ll wait until a week or two after the season. I don’t want to
have any distractions during the season.”

Bill Kurelic’s Comment: While Mahone says he does not have a
leader, I don’t think Michigan State trails anyone. He was very
impressed when he went to camp there and seems to know as much or more
about Michigan State than he does any school.
