Akron (Ohio) Buchtel junior wide receiver Corey Smith has
cut his list down to five schools … with one wild card.

The Spartans still remain in the mix for Smith
but have some ground to make up.

“I’m cutting my list down
to Notre Dame, West Virginia, Penn State, Tennessee and Illinois,”
Smith told Spartan Tailgate. “You can throw Michigan State in there as
my wild card.”

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Smith also holds offers from Akron,
Alabama, Ball State, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Miami (OH), North Carolina,
Toledo and Vanderbilt.

Smith said he needs to get to know the Michigan State coaches
better, which was the reasoning behind the Spartans not making the cut.
But he hasn’t eliminated Michigan State … yet.

“If I had to throw another school in there, it would be Michigan
State,” Smith said “Michigan State is still in it, I just need to get a
better feel from them. But right now it’s those five because I’ve been
talking with all them the most.”

Smith briefly broke down why those five made the cut:

Tennessee: “The environment and the coaches.”

Notre Dame: “The tradition.”

Penn State: “I like their stadium and the coaches.”

West Virginia: “Definitely the coaches.”

Illinois: “The coaches and the early playing time.”

“I’m going to focus on those five and Michigan State, too.” Smith
said. “I’m going to commit sometime this summer.”

Smith took a trip to Tennessee this past weekend for its spring
game and plans on visiting Michigan State later this month for its
spring game.

“I’ll be there on [April 30],” Smith said.
