The Division IV girls basketball Final Four wrapped up the first day
of  the 36th annual girls basketball state tournament Thursday at Ohio
State’s Schottenstein Center. And the small schools made big noise.
Here’s how it played out…

Fort Loramie 72, Shadyside 28
Playing in their sixth state tournament and second in a row, the
Redskins added their name to the record book with a 44-point decision
that’s the widest margin of victory in D-IV state tournament history
and the second largest margin of victory in any division ever. Only
South Euclid Regina’s 46-point win over Ironton in the 2005 D-III state
semifinals ranks higher.

Loramie (22-5) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and was never
threatened. Shadyside (26-1) was able to pull within 14-10 in the first
quarter but managed just 18 points the rest of the game. Loramie scored
more than that in both the first and fourth quarters.

Senior Janel Olberding led the Redskins with 14 points and five
assists. Senior Tori Maurer and freshman Darian Rose each added 12.
Loramie outrebounded the Tigers 38-15 and held them to 8-of-36 shooting
for the game (22.2-percent). Loramie also scored 29 points off of 20
Shadyside turnovers.

Sophomore Hayley Holenka led Shadyside with eight points. The Tigers bench was outscored 24-0.

*Player of the Game: Darian Rose, Fr., Fort Loramie:
The 5-foot-8 reserve came off the bench and gave a heroic effort. Rose
lost her grandfather last Sunday and attended his funeral this week. On
the night Rose hit 6-of-8 shots and scored 12 points. She also logged
four rebounds and two steals.
*Stat of the Game: After three quarters, Shadyside
trailed 45-21 and had zero bench points, zero fast break points, zero
points in the paint and zero second chance points.

Harvest Prep 55, Delphos Jefferson 52
In the day’s most competitive game, the defending D-IV state champion
Warriors found another gear and enough shots down the stretch to
outlast the Wildcats – barely. With 4.1 seconds left HP senior Chelsea
McKnight drained one clutch free throw to give the Warriors a 3-point
lead and Jefferson’s ensuing Hail Mary shot from half-court hit the
shot clock and not pay dirt. The final whistle capped a chaotic fourth
quarter that saw Jefferson (23-3) rally from an 11-point second half
deficit.

HP (26-1) was led by senior sensation Shicole Watts (Xavier
recruit) who had 17 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out with 3:12
to go and her team clinging to a 47-43 lead. McKnight added 17 points of
her own.

Jefferson was led by junior Kennedy Boggs who had 16 points.

Harvest Prep held a 23-21 lead at halftime, and the teams
combined to shoot 18-of-65 in the first half. For the game the club’s
were a combined 40-of-110.

The Warriors were also able to overcome 25 turnovers.

*Player of the Game: Chelsea McKnight, Sr., Harvest
Prep: In addition to scoring 17 points and hitting a free throw with
4.1 seconds left, McKnight also logged five steals, four rebounds and
three assists. She also disrupted the Wildcats last second play by
intercepting the in-bounds pass and hurling it back inbounds. McKnight is headed to Miami, Ohio.
*Stat of the Game: Harvest Prep outrebounded Jefferson 48-28. The Warriors had 17 offensive rebounds.

Division IV Final: Fort Loramie (22-5) vs Harvest Prep (26-1), Saturday, 2 p.m.
